Here's the thing.  Good humor punches up.  Malicious humor punches down.   (I punch myself.)

When Jordan Klepper interviews a dangerous and insane person, is he punching up?  Down?  Sideways?

Can we please put a psychiatric hold on Mike Lindell?

Sometimes the truth is worth pursuing, regardless of the direction of the punch. If humor is derived from the action, all the better.

I haven't seen Jordan Klepper organise a rally of that size. Or any size.
I haven't seen national news media covering any of Jordan Klepper's conspiracy claims for months.
I don't recall Jordan Klepper ever being a personal guest and adviser to any US Presidents.
I haven't seen Jordan Klepper use his personal fortune to buy the means to amplify his personal political opinions.

Anybody Klepper approaches for an interview is free to say "I'd rather not be interviewed today"; anybody Klepper interviews is, upon reflection, free to not sign a waiver allowing the Viacom Corp. to use their likeness for entertainment purposes. We the viewer may shake our heads and snort in exasperation at these chuckleheads cause we know they're willingly burying their heads in outlandish conspiracy theories but their looking like idiots is a direct result of their total lack of self-awareness, not because Klepper is making jokes at their expense. He's giving them an opportunity to explain themselves clearly and the fact that these people invariably use that opportunity to highlight their own ignorance and hypocrisy is an issue purely of their own making.

That whole punching analogy is fine as a generalization, but that's all it is. It's an oversimplification.

Roasts are funny.  They punch down. Admittedly with an implicit understanding with the target, but that's just part of the reason you can't always generalize about this.

Insult comics punch down. The best ones actually ultimately make themselves the butt of the joke (although dumb racists, for example, or other dumb haters of other things don't always sense this and for example bemoan for the days when people weren't so "sensitive"). Again, it's a more than obvious relationship with punch direction.

Most political humor in the Trump Age has by necessity been forced to punch down.  You can't portray idiocy any other way. I don't mean taking cheap shots, but yes, they HAVE to mock people.  Or it's not sincere. Because they really feel these people are acting like fools.

Some of those people, just wow it still amazes me some of the stuff they think. Sounds like a bunch of my cousins in Ohio, the one woman that wanted the history studied but was against critical race learning, wow. And the couple with the water fountains and how things were better in the 60s and 70s.

I have every respect for the dude who went to all the Covid-spreader events and took the risk of actual violence for being around the sisterfarkigest of undereducated lunatics over the last year.

I've been hitting those 5 minute Daily Show clips on Youtube for a year and they've been a goddamned joy.

Also, for everyone who biatches about Trevor hosting the Daily Show, he and his collaborators really did step up. Remember that Stewart had the murderer's row of Colbert, Carrell, John Oliver and Sam Bee at his side and by the end even his third-string team were people as recognizable as Al Madrigal, John Hodgman and Jessica Williams.

We could be worse off than to see Jordan Klepper and Roy Wood as our next generation of comedy news talking head guys.

Mike Lindell is worth over $300M, can be on the news anytime he wants to spout his baseless nonsense, and runs his own media campaign in support of Trumpian politics.  He has every privilege someone can possibly have, and has the ear of the most power man in the GOP.

Well over 99.999% of people mocking him are punching up.

Punching up or down has to do with social power imbalances. Roasts aren't punching down because it's not a bunch of privileged people insulting a marginalized person. A lot of the time it's people insulting their own, which isn't punching up or down, or comics insulting celebrities and elected officials, which is punching up. Insulting people who are more or less on your same social stratus is just being insulting, which is what insult comics do, but it's a fine line. If a white insult coming starts making racist jokes at the expense of a POC in the audience, that's punching down, and we call that racism.

The question also becomes moot when it's completely voluntary on both sides. With roasts and interviews* all participants have placed themselves on the same level.

/*With interviews it might be happening after the actual interview, but it still happens before it airs.
