Yes, because when everyone's votes count, a majority will win.

White folks are gettin' reeeeeaaaaal nervous about that majority.

2021-06-18 6:11:25 AM
But "The party of Lincoln!" couldn't have a problem with this, could they?

To Republicans, fighting segregation is a bad thing.

Party of Lincoln!!!

What I love is that because the amendment about militia says "shall not be infringed" in it it means to Conservatives that no regulation is constitutional

But because the Voting amendment does not specifically say "Shall not be infringed" it means we can regulate and restrict the hell out of it.

The balls of these people.

It's worse than this. Republicans no longer accept election results when not in their favor. By not accept, I mean insurrection, murder, coup and enlisting the aid of foreign governments to install a dictator by force.

I see a full civil war in America's near future.

Kind of like how they call everyone a "Commie Socialist!!!" and you just kind of blink because you don't know where to start.

It's trying to say that Democrats aren't honestly fighting for the franchise because of civic responsibility, but it of pure cynical partisanship.

Of course, it raises the question of why the Republicans are against counting votes, and, even if the motive of Democrats is self-serving, why isn't that the outcome we want?

2021-06-18 8:48:39 AM
Yes because denying people their legal right to vote would be the worst thing in the world. They might actually win elections fairly if they crafted policies that benefited a majority of the country and not just their rich overlords and the base that thinks they will benefit them.

It would probably have been better if they didn't essentially paraphrase Trump on his call to Georgia.

The right always tries to attack the left for things that are wholly a feature of the right.

It stems from the deeply held belief of all Republicans that it is completely impossible for ANY democrat to win ANY election for ANY office ANYWHERE in the United States except by fraudulent means.

The implication, which is stupid, is that when Democrats say every vote should count, what they mean is that even votes that are not valid should be counted, including votes from corpses, votes from noncitizens, votes from felons where that's not allowed.

The implication is that Democrats can't win in a fair fight, which is laughable to anyone with a brain. The silent Republican majority is a decades-old fiction.

They're already passing laws saying they don't have to certify elections based on how people actually voted. The question is, will Democrats fight it when their candidates win an election but aren't certified, or will they roll over and say "well, it was the law, nothing we can do"?

It is of course commonplace to imagine what various framers of the constitution or leaders of the revolution would do, if confronted with current American assholery, but more and more I'm thinking Lincoln is the historical figure we should be invoking. Can you imagine Ol' Abe coming across these farkknuckles?I'm thinking President Railsplitter, there - "big guy, big reach" - is grabbing up the nearest axe handle and engaging in a little uhhhmm reconstructive justice.

With the amount of money we spend on the military, you'd think they could afford new bayonets, instead of having to fix them after they broke.

As must be repeated several times daily here, the Senate was never intended to proportionately represent population.  That's what the House is for.

As a 40-year old white guy with a beard and a Southern/Cajun accent, I do have a slight nervousness of being lumped in with the retrogrades on first contact. Yes, I know, it's not the WORST stereotype to have, but I'd rather we shoot for a point where no one is stereotyping each other. We don't immediately know what someone else has been through be just looking at them. And yes, it has happened before. I showed up to protest ICE and got some rather nasty invective hurled my way because they thought I was there in favor of the detentions. Tensions get high at protests, I understand, but I certainly don't want to be lashed out at and/or attacked because of how I look. Two wrongs don't make a right.

While I haven't personally done anything to oppress anyone else, I know a few of my ancestors certainly did and that has put the current generation in a worse off starting position...but I'm doing what I can now to rectify that situation. We need to get past some initial knee-jerk reactions to work together and show some solidarity, otherwise we'll always be at each other's throats forever.
