Username checks out. Song upthread was from 2008. Devo weren't the only people traveling backwards in time and reporting on events in their history / our future.

The next video is fanmade from 2010. Apparently there was some sort of economic kerfuffle in 2008 and an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico but I've since been assured that was all Fake News, and that Later is Later, not Now, and definitely not ten years ago.

It does not hint.

It says that the people examined had significant brain damage - the early stages of dementia.

Those people did not have severe cases, did not go to the hosptial.

Previously, it was found that only about 30% of cases had brain damage. There was no difference based on age. This study is much worse.

One interesting question is why so few people with brain damage have come forward to discuss it in the media.

Previous study that proved a minimum of 30% of Covid survivors have brain damage, age is no protection.

They may not realize its brain damage, may not want to think about it and dont want to pay for that kind of test.

Guy at work still doesn't have his sense of taste back. I guess that could be brain damage. But I"m not going to harass him to get tested either.

Probably because a small amount of brain damage can be generally overcome without any ill effects.

What do you mean "so few"?

"Brain Fog" is one of the most commonly reported long term side symptoms of COVID and there's loads of articles discussing it.

That's a pretty clear sign COVID is doing something to people's brains even if the neurology of it hasn't been figured out yet.

This disease harms just about every function in the body in ways associated with decreased life expectancy.  I won't be surprised at all when having had even mild Covid brings about age-related diseases earlier and decreases life expectancy by 5 or 10 years.

There was no control group and many of the patients already had a neurological or psychiatric diagnosis (not nwcessarily "brain damage") before COVIID: "Among 236379 patients diagnosed with COVID-19, the estimated incidence of a neurological or psychiatric diagnosis in the following 6 months was 33·62% (95% CI 33·17-34·07), with 12·84% (12·36-13·33) receiving their first such diagnosis."

The result was not statistically significant compared to control so this is a big nothingburger.

Nonpo: The result was not statistically significant compared to control so this is a big nothingburger.

It wasn't significant among hospitalized patients, but was significant among the wider group of all COVID patients. (Still, as I tell my students, "statistically significant" doesn't necessarily mean "practically significant"; effect sizes matter. Also I wonder if there are some multiple-comparisons issues going on, as they're fiding significant effects for some pretty specific areas of the brain out of a not-large group of patients ... But I haven't dug into the methods.)

Also, the usual grain of salt applies to not-yet peer reviewed preprints...

Heidi Ferrer, a writer for "Dawson's Creek," committed suicide in May after a yearlong battle with COVID-19, ...

She had contracted COVID-19 in April 2020 and was still fighting the virus over a year later. Ferrer was "bedridden and in constant physical pain" in May due to long-term symptoms of the virus, including severe neurological tremors.

Covid is nasty. I have no doubt it causes loss of brain tissue, look at all the people suffering the symptoms of Long Covid.

Consider how many people have contracted and recovered from covid at this time, and then contemplate that most of them probably have brain damage as a result. It's not a pleasant thought.

A brain diminishing virus is really the last thing we need. People have been wishing for a virus that would kill the chronically stupid, not a virus that creates more.
