Oh no. Now where will creepy middle-aged men be able to gawp at scantily-clad women while pretending it's not soft porn? I predict a boom in prices for back-issues of the Sears catalog.

I don't really see what they have to get rid if the "angels" or the fashion show; just expand your model lineup to include all the body types that you're marketing to.

My guess it that was expensive to produce, and their new franchise faces weren't interested in performing it.

Tastes differ. A good number of men might find the new models more interesting than the usual series of bland bots.

My wife would be annoyed if I tried buying lingerie for her. She's the one who wears it, she wants to know if it's comfortable (well, comfortable enough for the amount of time it's on).

I only go into VS to buy their body spray, and I still feel weird asking if they have any "very sexy for him."

My wife with giant boobs would disagree. I don't shop there for her because their size chart is all sorts of incorrect.

The boutique clothing business model VS has going on feels like it's on a limited life span anyway, not that it'll ever go away, but I half expect them to go the Gamestop route and start selling retro Angel Funko Pop toys any moment now

They do.  They advertise to an extremely narrow lineup of body types and they've publicly commented on this more than once.

I got nothing against the pretty women, but VS bras suck - they're uncomfortable, expensive, and don't last.  Anything that costs this company money and advertising is a good thing.

I know this may come as a surprise for you, but women are NOT just dress-up dolls that exist to cater to the wild fantasies of men. Shocking I know.

And I know this from experience. Men would buy me lingerie all the time and I'd just end up tossing them out because returning or donating underwear it is just nasty. None of them worked in women's fashion or took the time to ask for my measurements, they were just "This look sexy plz wear it while you blow me" and I'm like "LOL. Wrong size. Incredibly uncomfortable. Just because it looks sexy to you doesn't mean I FEEL sexy wearing it" and thus won't wear it.

The smart ones end up just getting me gift cards and let me buy what I feel sexy in.

MatrixOutsider: Stupid business decision, as it is the GUYS who buy that stuff for women.

I don't think that's true. I think that was the idea when the store started (with original management) but the fatal flaw in that plan is that no matter how comfortable for men you make a lingerie store, you still can't know what any particular piece is going to look like on your woman and bringing home sexytime wear that doesn't fit right is a dangerous farking proposition for a man.

The Angels fashion show may appear on the surface like it caters to straight men, but it really doesn't. The purpose of the Angels is to create the brand idea that exquisitely beautiful goddesses wear Victoria's Secret. That way women will want to shop there to feel like one of those Angels.

That's why more openly catering to... non-traditionally desirable body types is a terrible business decision and it has nothing to do with men. Don't get me wrong, men like looking at the VS Angels in lingerie, but we all have smart phones. We'll get along without it.

But if Victoria's Secret loses its little bit of exclusivity, its aspirational nature, the ability for an everyday woman from the midwest to feel, just for a moment, like one of those ethereally beautiful models, so beautiful that they almost don't even seem real; then Victoria Secret just becomes a commodity store that sells underwear. And I've heard many many women say that VS products are expensive, uncomfortable and of low quality.

MY point is that VS current marketing strategy of catering to those types of men is the reason why they are at bankruptcy - its just not a sustainable business model. Thus pivoting to cater directly to the people who will end up buying and wearing their products and becoming long-term customers is a good direction to go.

Magnanimous_J: And I've heard many many women say that VS products are expensive, uncomfortable and of low quality.

Which is why they've been under performing in the last couple of years and are trying to do something different now. Their business model as been selling what's in stock whether it's comfortable for the wearer or not. Competitors entered the online market place selling women comfort versus ethereal beauty, with better quality and without the additional brand cost of shopping at VS.

While you might be worried they're losing their exclusive nature, they've done better this year already than same time of year in past years, pre-pandemic. Turns out when a prior business models fails for years, a different approach may be needed.

I kinda get it, but I also wonder how well it's going to work.

There are some women out there who want to feel sexy in a "damn, I look good" sort of way rather than a "damn, I should be a CEO or taking on the patriarchy" sort of way. That's not to say they shouldn't be CEOs or take on the patriarchy, but that doesn't mean they don't want to be sexy doing it.

My wife wanted to watch the VSFS more than I did (the running joke was she "made me" watch it). She runs her own retro clothing boutique. She sells What Katie Did and Secrets In Lace stuff. She runs her own fashion show that shows that stuff with women of all sizes and shapes. It's a damn good look. And yes, it is retro. But one of the popular phrases in that scene is "vintage look, modern ethics," meaning just because you look like the past doesn't mean you believe we should turn back the clock on treatment of women.

She's going to be more disappointed about this than me because it's just generally a turn away from women being and feeling sexy just for the sake of being and feeling sexy, which will hurt her industry as a whole. She likes just being sexy, not for my sake or for men's sake in general but for her own sake (though I like her for it, too).

Not "just", but definitely sometimes, if you've got a woman who's fun and likes to keep it interesting.

It only seems to bother women who aren't, and don't.

Sometimes unhappy people hate it when others like stuff they don't think others should like.
Shocking I know.

good plan.  you sell overpriced merchandise bases solely on your brand image and so getting rid your brand's biggest promotion should work out great.

here's a question.  how many below par quarters is it going to take before VS is being sold in Target/Walmart/etc?

and that'll really teach VC because if you throw it out they have to give the money back. nope wait that's not what happens at all.

so long as they can convince men to buy for their ladies it doesn't matter if it is never worn.

I mean they just had their best quarter in a long while with the changes they've made, so probably at least while?

How many quarters of success before people decide that maybe marketing to the people wearing their clothing was a good idea?

I don't trust the wire in a VC bra to last a single wash. Plus they don't carry beyond a 38 band, and DD cup. I need at least a 36F, and not just anyone carries that. But I found Curvy Kate, I'll just pick me up some of their Scantilly line if I feel like one upping the Angels.
