"It will expand them based on user feedback"

I seriously doubt that.  If it were actually based on user feedback, they wouldn't be adding them in the first place.  Nobody says, "I want ads in my 3D world, and make them bigger and more intrusive later."

What users say: Fark You.

What Facebook hears: They love us so much they want to have sex with us.

A company founded by a nazi and then sold to Facebook?
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!

My level of outrage here depends on whether or not the games getting the ads are "free" or if these are games that cost money upfront.  I admittedly know little about the Occulus game ecosystem, but either way this seems like a good way to push a lot of users towards side-loading unofficial apps, which I now know is a thing.

My disappointment at facebook buying out Occulus continues to grow.  I've wanted a home VR headset ever since I was a kid and the arcade at my local mall had a very primitive VR headset that played Wolfenstein 3D.  Even with the low-quality screen and no head tracking it was still amazing.  The sense of immersion you get from having your peripheral vision occupied just can't be beat.  Now the tech to do that in my own home exists, but the only viable option for me is the Occulus.  Everything else out there is either way outside my budget or I don't have the hardware for.  It's like you've been craving pizza for a really long time and then you finally get one but it's got pineapple on it.

TMI warning:

I was like 7 when this song came out but my parents were recently divorced so they had separate copies of the wedding album and both listened to it religiously and separately and constantly. It shaped my attitude to dislike advertisements even at that young age:

Great that windows In VR games are doable now (still remember the Rift DK1 experience any time someone tried to put some kind of settings menu into a VR demo), but ehhhhh... fark no.

Mobile games introduced a sickness into game development(/recycling/mangling) on multiple levels, and some things even oozed out into other platforms. I want advertising to stay the fark in phone jail and hopefully die some time down the line from there.

/That said, if you make a game I want, try charging me instead. I might buy it instead of dealing with that BS.

They'll just word the feedback question appropriately: "Would you like to see a small level of advertising in-App in exchange for vastly reduced hardware cost?" or similar. Then claim the users are desperate to see ads rather than desperate to get cheaper hardware.

Anyway, what would total immersion be without ads these days? Can't get away from the bastard things...

beat me by that much.

It's the line about 'using 80% of the users' visual field before inducing seizures' that's straight from the mind of Verhoeven

I have been looking at getting a 3D headset but if I'm going to be inundated with "DRINK MORE OVALTINE" when I reload Bioshock it's going to be a hard sell.

People buying hardware from Facebook deserve this. Frankly I hope it starts looking like Ow My Balls.

If you give Facebook any piece of information or any money at all, even one penny, fark you.

Quantumbunny: People buying hardware from Facebook deserve this.

I got an Oculus before Facebook bought the company, because I didn't want the one hat's controlled by Valve, another company I don't like.

VR is completely off the table for me since there's no way to access content without accepting deal-breaker terms of service.

And yes, fark facebook with a knife.

Serving the ads is a necessary step to them using movement (and in the next version, eye tracking) to build a psychographic profile impossible to not share on the platform.

Think you can control where your eyes go when you're being A/B tested in VR?

I have a Reverb 2 and an Index. I wish the index controllers and steam OS were easier to combine with the Reverb headset.

I would never give money to the zucc

"User" here is defined as the ones using the service to advertise. If they like lit, it will be expanded.

Your 3D glasses are not impacted by changes to VR.

You forget, the public aren't the Users of Facebook, they ate the Product.

The Users will be the advertisers. If they see an increase in traffic that can be linked back to the pop-ups, then it will be logged as a success
