Web news means people writing articles but not calling around to get any facts.

Back in the 70's it was a rite of passage for cab drivers to steal deodorant, not only to use on themselves but also as air fresheners for their cabs. It eventually got out of hand and so the stores and bodegas in Manhattan began locking them down. In protest cab drivers refused to wear any deodorant and would purposely eat the smelliest foods they could to stink up their hack. It eventually became a tradition and even a point of pride to create the most pungent and nauseating environment for their customers.

I love the concept of giving out free deodorant

Actual lock & key or is it the barrier that beeps when you lift it?  Anyway, Shoplifters probably didn't stop at one and would clear out the aisle, which screwed up the numbers, so they had to take drastic measures.
/article writer is easily confused but deadlines are tough.

Heck with calling, quick Google search found lots of info, including this 8-year old article that explains it : https://hazlitt.net/feature/lockdown

Turns out stores tend to lock up things that people like to steal.

When I was in high school the kid sitting on the bus behind me decided to fire one of these past my head. Thankfully I suffered nothing worse than slightly scorched hair, but things could have been worse.

/deodorant is generally sold straight off the shelf round here, but I can see the logic in being cautious

Option 1: Ask the sales clerk at the register why they lock up their deodorant.

Option 2: Read any of the thousands of articles from across the entire country written on the subject, sometimes involving Black hair care products, Tide detergent or other non-deodorant items.

Option 3: Yell, "Why?" at the internet.

Roll-on keeps a nice steady flame, too.  It's the alcohol!

Yeah, I think that we're forgetting about subby here when dishing out internet shame. This is the dumbest thing greenlit in awhile.

I bailed on The Straight Dope not long after it went paywall.

Yeah, that long ago.

It used to be "don't speculate or bullshiat" was the rule there, but as soon as it went to paid posting privileges, people used their paid status as an excuse to speculate and bullshiat.
