Nationalistic pride rears its ugly head yet again. The entire world would like this postponed.

My wallets?

I'm not a Japanese citizen!

uhh speak for yourself. I'd like to see it over the summer if it can be done safely, which it can.

You have many athletes who will miss their chance at the olympics which they have been training their life for if you don't do it. If you delay it further you run into all kinds of other messes.

Let japan decide what they want to do for fans, make sure the athletes, coaches, staff, etc are vaccinated, and lets have a little fun and excitement.

Aren't the Olympic games usually a loss when it comes to profits?

This.  So much this.  If it can be done safely, then do it.

Olympic accounting rivals Hollywood accounting.

Nope. If I don't give a shiat about the sport in any non-Olympic year, I certainly am not going to pay to watch it in an Olympic year. Looking at you, track and field.

Ironically, the Los Angeles Olympics of 1984 made a nice profit.  Part of the money was turned into an endowment for a local nonprofit that is still active.

The 2028 LA Olympics should be similar.

It should have been cancelled and Tokyo given a turn at a later date.

Maybe NBC should make it a pay-per-view event.  Not that anyone would ever pay money to listen to Bob Costas' preachy commentaries.

It's been canceled before. Why can't we just bump everybody back four years? Or two years?

I don't think I've seen anyone in sports media write the story yet, but I think of you piece a bunch of small stories together it seems that pro athletes are one of the more vaccine hesitant groups out there.

so while I agree with your sentiment, I don't think we can assume that requiring athletes to be vaccinated would give us a "normal Olympics just without fans"

Once again the IOC doesn't have to foot the bill for their patting themselves on the back.

Great plan.  And then 4 years later NBC can ask the IOC how much they need to pay NBC to show the thing?

- part of it is how bad network coverage of Olympic sports has been since the cold war.  The old narrative died and they had to make it an soap opera for each American athlete (preferably with strong medal odds) with the occasional piece on rivals or other "ideal soap opera" material.

- the rest of it is the naked corruption of the IOC.

/loved the Olympics as a kid
//couldn't make myself watch it after the fall of the Berlin Wall
///have to wonder which changed more, me or the coverage?

It's almost as if the Olympics were created to so that semi-interesting sports could be marketed. If curling, bobsled, gymnastics, track, and swimming had to compete every year for television and media attention, they'd die off. But package them together once every four years and they manage to survive despite the fact that they're actually pretty boring.

Sorry, I'm already paying for the Atlanta Braves stadium.

It's kinda dumb, athletes spend half (or more) of their lives prepping for the Olympics, and get one shot at a 5 minute activity, and win or lose they then go home.

Granted there are exceptions.

How would it not?  Are you telling me that if they mandated it for athletes (although we've almost surpassed the point that it would matter) that people would give up on their olympic dreams?

I imagine young fit athletes aren't exactly running to get vaccinated against stuff that generally doesn't kill healthy people and makes you feel like crap for a few days.  But if you told them to, I imagine they would.

I doubt there's anyone that would throw a massive Ricky Shroeder stink about it.

I'm looking a little closer to home for my live sports fix BEFORE worrying about the Olympics.  A kid missed his 1st year starting football season.  At least the University is honouring scholarships.  My youngest will need this year for highlight reel footage to fish for basketball scholarships.
