(Cracked)   Statistically speaking, being a red shirt is one of the safest gigs on the Starship Enterprise   (cracked.com) divider line

In fact, the very first redshirt was wearing a blue shirt.

Lies. Damn lies, and statistics.

The trick to surviving as a redshirt was to never be in the same room as the captain, first officer, doctor, comms officer, engineer, helmsman or tactical officer.

And never leave the ship.

If that were true, then RetIrony wouldn't exist on TVtropes with a fairly long section Film and TV.

What happened with this one, is it became such a joke, that's it rarely used today (becoming a DeadHorseTrope)

One of my favorite t-shirts.  Few people look closely enough to realize it's a Star Trek reference.

The red shirt trope has moved beyond the actual red shirts though.

Bet the percentage on that statistical analysis would skyrocket if you used the real definition of red shirts, which is "any friendly 'grunt' character you've never seen before who is working with the main cast."

Roomie and I just watched a Stargate Atlantis episode the other day where Weir sent a second team of marines to support Sheppard's unit and the entire second team got ganked before they ever even saw Sheppard. Not speck of red among them until Micheal was done with them. But they damn sure were red shirts.

Exactly.  Redshirt means security guard, not just any schmoe in a red shirt.  Leave out the Engineering and other operations divisions, and I bet that percentage suddenly gets a lot higher.

Statistically speaking Ted McGinley joining a show means that it will last a few more years.  Facts rarely matter.

Yep, it's being an extra that's the problem. Kirk, McCoy, Spock and Ensign Jones beam down to a planet. Guess who's dead by the next commercial break?

I read the article before finding this on Fark and without checking TVtropes it occurred to me it was likely the list was made by some youngster who never saw any shows where that was a legit thing. Since they mention McBain this almost feels like claiming Krusty did not represent any sort of clown in media.

We all know Krusty the Clown is supposed to be Pogo the Clown.

Articles like this one make it sound like the author didn't spend much more time than a couple of cursory Google searches to find enough background material to fill the requirement from his editor.

It could be argued the skirts were short enough they were just long shirts.

My dad likes to tease my mom about an outfit she had in the early 70's that had a long shirt and matching pants. She ditched the pants and went out in public like that.

Even her wedding dress was short. The most common comment when someone sees their wedding picture is how young my dad looked, followed almost immediately by "Holy shiat, that dress is short!"

On TOS, the first previously unknown security man to die wasn't wearing red.  Perhaps colour is irrelevant, and it's the job, that's risky.

Dear people who came to a thread about the statistics of the life of a red shirt.  May I suggest to you a book? Redshirts by John Scalzi I would liken it to the movie Galaxy Quest.

My only challenge is he spent how many books talking about old people clones having sex? Five?

Red Shirts has amazing appeal until they "figure it out," then becomes something less than parody and more like a ln episode of Star Trek.

I started reading it, and lost interest when they got to the point they went to the TV show world and were going to find the actor who plays the checkov epixy.

Yeah, I was really disappointed when they went to go "fix it" and then it felt like a parody of itself. the writing was good but the solution is up there with "baby tantrums destroys all the fuel in the galaxy"
