More than that, they are exhausting Taiwan's defense capabilities by making it put flight hours on its aircraft and consume fuel. All that costs money.

Of course we don't know the details of such sensitive logistics information, but if Taiwan's response starts to slack it could indicate they are having issues with maintenance or something else that's keeping them from sending up as many aircraft.

It's a very real "attack" in the sense it degrades equipment and consumes resources. In some ways it's no different than if they dropped a bomb on a fuel site, either way that fuel is gone and can't be used again

The Chinese didn't enter Taiwan's 'air space,' they entered Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone - they're not the same thing.

Air space is the air over the territory of a nation.

ADIZ is just the area designated by a country in which they will attempt to identify and track aircraft.

This is a map of Taiwan's ADIZ - notice that parts of it are over China.

depends on if this is their actual response.

The usaf in Alaska don't use all their expensive tech on simple intercepts.

Fuel is just more flying hours for pilots...

For the US sure that's the case, but for a country with those kind of resources and who's dependent on foreign suppliers of military goods it's a real concern

From Wikipedia:
"Tankie is a pejorative label originally used by dissident or sectarian Marxist-Leninists to designate members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) who followed the party line of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). Specifically it was used to distinguish party members who spoke out defending Soviet use of tanks to crush the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and later the 1968 Prague Spring uprising; or more broadly, those who adhered to pro-Soviet positions in general.[1] More recently it has been used to accuse people of following authoritarian Marxism-Leninism, especially those who endorse, defend, or deny the crimes of communist leaders that are considered especially authoritarian, such as Joseph Stalin or Mao Zedong."

The state of the Soviet Union in its late stages and the state of China today are practically nothing alike. For all the shiat people throw at China, legitimately so, it's nowhere near collapse. Its increased military spending is the result of a robust and growing economy, unlike the Soviet Union where the entire state was essentially built around military heavy industry at the cost of practically everything else. Most Chinese citizens are fiercely patriotic and see themselves on the rise globally and legitimately support their government due to consistent quality of life development and global standing over the last several decades, whatever we in the West want to throw at that government.

A far more apt comparison would be something like late 19th/early 20th century Germany/USA/Japan, up and coming powers throwing their weight around wanting to be taken as seriously as all the other big boys who don't like new players into their club, often belligerently antagonistic or militaristic in their own ways, and who often are way too wrapped up in their own bullshiat they need to tell themselves to keep going on that path.

It's not about testing the reaction itself sometimes. China has more planes and pilots. There are actually weeks were they make the Taiwanese scramble their planes so often that they are just checking how exhausted they can make the other side for the lulz. It is a psyops to make Taiwan feel under siege but w/o a nude Erika Eleniak jumping out of a cake.

They gonna love it when China seizes TSMC and Apple/AMD and countless other big corporations go kaput because all their products are made there and it takes a decade and tens of billions to build a similar capability in semiconductors.

FFS, the US and Europe should be investing $100 billion TODAY in building that capability here before China goes all Empire of Japan on us.

sleze: Why does China comment about NATO?  Does Portugal care about Indonesia's opinion on stuff?

Portugal denounced Indonesia for like 20 plus years, severing diplomatic relations, and opposing them in international bodies, after the later annexed their former colony of East Timor.

sleze: Why does China comment about NATO?  Does Portugal care about Indonesia's opinion on stuff?

Because the entirety of China's several thousand kilometer long Pacific coastline faces a gauntlet of military bases belonging to a NATO member, or a nation/political entity that has some sort of military cooperation agreement or understanding with that NATO member, within possible striking distance of China and standing between China and the open ocean.

I first heard the term on Fark a few months ago, and it certainly fits a certain couple of posters I am thinking of. Though I think the one admitted Maoist we had flamed out and hasn't been seen in a while. Or the powers that be finally got sick of his shiat.
