(NHL)   If this was Feb of a leap year, the 29th day of the playoffs would be special. But it isn't so it's just a Monday. Ah well. However we do have the 1st game of the Las Vegas/Montreal series from LV at 9pm ET so that's kind of special, sort of, maybe SUP   (nhl.com) divider line

Go Habs go.

2021-06-14 9:10:31 AM
It's a tough one for me. Vegas is a very strong team, and they have a great "narrative" of being made up of a bunch of rejects and castoffs who gelled into a fantastic team.

But, I really really hate the campy "Vegas-ness" of their home games. It's offensively vulgar. It's very Vegas.

I hope the Habs make it through to the next round, but I was ready to lose to the Avs. Even though Vegas is the stronger team, I can't get behind them despite the players themselves being fantastic.

farking Las Vegas better not get a Stanley Cup! Go Habs go, but barring that, go ANYONE ELSE

Meh, I'd love to go to a game there. Looks like it would be an absolute blast. They embrace their home city and culture around that city. I think it works really well for them and especially their fan base.

I'm rooting for Vegas but Montreal scares me if Price is on fire.

ANY other team & I'd completely agree with you.  Being that it is Las Vegas, the land of garish floor shows ... eh ... I'm ok with the insipid productions as it fits in well with the city (get rid of the gold helmets though, that's a bridge too far).

I completely get that Vegas SHOULD act like Vegas, but I also know that the league is taking note and that within a few years, this is what hockey will look like. I don't like that bit

That Vegas got the expansion at all is a good thing - lots of tourists who would never get to see a hockey game in person get to enjoy a fantastic game. And being Vegas level insane, it's entertaining for even a non-hockey fan. All around great idea.

Until they bring the circus to the Stanley cup playoffs.

Until every arena looks like Vegas'

And that's my issue.

If Vegas had a Harlem Globetrotters of Hockey, I'd be celebrating the introduction of the sport to a new audience. But the globetrotters don't belong in the NBA either

Again, this is not about the coaching or the players. The Knights are a hell of a team. They are not a joke.

Well, Vegas is a better team as far as we can tell. But then again Montreal just sort of tore through a number of games in a row, so who knows?

I don't think your concerns are invalid, but I think they are a bit premature.  Vegas brought their circus all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2018, haven't missed the playoffs in their existence, and I haven't seen the other teams racing to duplicate the Vegas floor show experience in their arenas.  The sense I have is that people realize that what Vegas does really only works in Vegas.  If Seattle tries to be Vegas 2.0 with their arena experience, then I'll worry.

At the end, sports (any, not just hockey) is entertainment.  Hockey is, to the new fan/uninitiated a very fast, very confusing game with bodies flying all over the place & constantly going on & off the ice, & where everyone's point of focus (the puck) is very small, fast moving, & hard to see.  If a pre game floor show, one that is almost never broadcast on the regional channels let alone the network games, helps that person say "I had no idea what was going on, but you know, I had a great time..." then great.

As long as the owner isn't forcing the players to participate
thumbs.gfycat.comView Full Size

I really don't have 'that' much of a problem with keeping the fans entertained, getting them into their seats, & hitting them with subliminal advertising "This pregame show brought to you by...".  If it bothers you that much, then if everyone else is paying attention to the show, it would be a great time to go get your nachos/beer.

Thinking back 20+ years to when we had partial season tickets to the local AHL team, 'every' intermission had some sort of 'keep the fans entertained' production going on.  The first half/2-3rds of the intermission would have the local midget teams having a scrimmage with a thousand people cheering for them, a bunch of kids chasing a remote control car around trying to catch it (can't use piglets any more, PETA doncha know), two guys in inflatable sumo suits trying to wrestle with each other, random fans 'skill' competitions (among other things, cover the goal with a sheet of plywood with a three puck wide slot cut along the bottom.  Fans shoot from center ice, hit the plywood (with a local car dealer's logo conveniently painted on it) win $50, get the puck through the slot, $500 & a 2nd shot.  Get the 2nd shot through also & get a year's car lease from said dealer (I won $500 once...). Etc. Then get everyone off the ice & get the zamboni/s cleaning things up (with a chair bolted upon the machine so that a kid could be belted onto it to wave to the crowd - making the kid's siblings in the future whine about wanting to go to a game so 'they' can ride the zamboni...)

The silliness/campiness has been around pretty much forever (or at least within today's fans living memory) it just generally, hasn't had Vegas show level production values.  As long as it doesn't make it to/cut into actual game broadcast time (or only VERY rarely show up - like NBC, most every Winter Classic for a while, making JR go swim with the local Polar Bear Club as a pre-game 'bit') I really don't have a problem with various teams trying different things to give the fans a better experience. And you can't discount the (outside of Toronto/NYC level pricing) "If you're going to the game tonight/next week/whenever, then you're taking the kids with you so I can have an evening to myself..." factor.  Those kids who were drug to 'another' hockey game probably will remember the show more than the game & perhaps years & years from now, will take 'their' kids to a hockey game because of their vague memories about how much fun the 'game' was.

The players/owners/staff/etc want to field a competitive team, but when they don't/can't, you've got to do 'something' to keep butts in the seats/ticket revenue coming in.  If a 10 min pregame show does that, more power to them (again, as long as the on ice product isn't impacted/involved)

Interesting from "Names on the Cup", on NHL Network, that the Habs pretty much win the Cup during the 50s as a result of union-busting, and the other teams banishing their stars who were involved in trying to organize a union.

There is a part of me that wants to say Vegas in 5 and another that says this could go 7, but still in Vegas' favor.
Vegas in 6.And part of me is still saying generous.

Everybody is convinced Montreal is The Giant Killer. Some are comparing it to 1986 and 1993 -- underrated finesse defense teams being lead by an elite goaltender and two hot scorers -- but this team is a lot thinner than those.

Let's take a closer look at how they got here.

The Maple Leafs basically killed themselves with a 3-1 lead brainfart. They let Montreal dictate the pace and the scoring in the final four games.

The Winnipeg Jets then swaggered out and proceeded to shoot themselves in the dick. Their best offensive weapon goes nutso and takes a mandated vacation for the series, the elite goalie comes out rusty in the first game; they never recovered. Add the loss of Stastny with Schiefele, and I'd say the two teams were even; Montreal just didn't have holes in the psyche and roster to deal with.

Vegas two weeks ago I would say had the same weakness. But they rose up to challenge their self-doubt and made Colorado look in the mirror and the Avs failed that reversal (yes, I can also agree with one Farker that the Avs appear to be top-heavy and Grubauer isn't a top-level goalie).

Hm, that old adage about sports being 80-90 percent mental does ring true in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

I will say Carey Price is a the best goalie the Knights have had to deal with, maybe the best, in their short playoff existence. I can't rule out that the last eight games for Montreal have been Carey Price reminding the world he was up with Henrik Lundqvist as contender for best goalie in the league before fading away to injuries and underwhelming Canadiens teams.

For Montreal to advance, it's all on Price and Vegas themselves farking it up and not respecting one or two individuals on the Canadiens' other lines.

They only used that one time. For a player who got hurt before the season

But that rule itself was to stop the "almost cheating" level farm system the Habs had built up. It was insane and only not cheating because nobody ever wrote a rule to stop it.

But, in fairness, they really really stacked the deck in their favour. They organized in a way that basically invented farm teams and scouting.

Just keep in mind that in those days, there were more than 6 teams and they all had access to talent if they could find it, being in hockey towns.
