If I had $28 million, I would spend it on something else.

But remembers, the world's richest man with $128 billion needed a bailout of $10 billion for a government contract he lost

New Shepard does clear the Von Karman line so yes he'll go to space.

Virgin and Branson come up short since they can barely clear 80km

I kind of know the answer already, but is it really really wrong if I watch that particular flight. kind of like the guy who watches NASCAR hoping for the crashes?

It doesn't make you a bad person.  Personally I think it would great drama if Bezos and other millionaires got nuked on a rocket.  And I respect he's putting himself on the line for the first test.

But...

My interest in rapidly expanding human space flight and new opportunities regardless of method or economic motive outweighs my interest in the boom boom.  So I'm rooting for a success.

Can we spend 28 million to keep him in space?

It's Elon hedging his bets. Either he makes it to space before Bezos, or he hitches a ride with Bezos so it can't be said he lost.

/Probably not
//But it'd be funny.

Here's hoping that they both discover that rocket science is hard on the ascent. Maybe with some rapid unplanned disassembly and/or some lithobraking.

I'd hold out for a Crew Dragon which goes into orbit as if you share it with a couple other billionaires is not that much more.

Wouldn't it be HILARIOUS if the bidder is revealed to be elon? It would either be a "hahaha i got this kinda chump change" gesture, or a strange form of billionaire solidarity.....

They will be announcing the winning bidder in "2 weeks" or so. But we can be SURE it's not a trump, they ain't got no actual money.....

This tweet is misleading as it implies that Bezos is pocketing the money. The 28 million is being donated to charity. Bezos is not on the space business to make money (though he won't object if he does). This a change the world thing for Bezos as he has been a believer his whole life.

/That being said, might I suggest better pay and/or working conditions at Amazon warehouses would also be a good way to change the world.

We need to think outside the box, People.  My guess is that his ex-wife paid for a hitman to ride with him and ensure that there is an "accident."  I'm sure that she is still in his will to get some portion of his billions, so $28 million is a drop in the bucket to a pay a good assassin.

Think I would spend $28M to make sure Flint finally got clean water.

The dilemma would be choosing the name of the sewage treatment plant as part of the deal. Do you go with I'M ERIC Sewage Treatment, Roger Stone Sewage Treatment, Mike Flynn Sewage Treatment, etc.? A very tough choice.

And what exactly is he going to do with the $10 Billion he is asking for Artemis?  He's willing to give away pennies, but he hangs on to the dollars.  Thus has always been the way of PR.

I was not addressing that issue, but since you asked...

Yeah, Bezos has a serious case of sour grapes over losing to bid to SpaceX.  His bid was too high, plain and simple.  There is however a complication. Ideally, two bidders should have been chosen. This way if one bidder fails to deliver or has severe safety issues they can fallback on the second bidder. This really paid off for NASA recently as if they had not done this they'd be stuck with Boeing to launch astronauts to the ISS.  The secondary winner was SpaceX and its Dragon capsule. The DoD usually contracts with two launch providers for similar reasons. Sadly Congress has been tight fisted, so NASA could only provide funds for one lunar landing system.  Of course, there was another bidder and for all we know, they too could have beaten Blue Origin's National Team.

I want people think priatizing spaceflight is advantageous to explain why their idea of private spaceflight holds up in light of that tweet. When they hear how everything they say basically falls apart, hopefully they will realize spaceflight must be nationalized for it to be cost-effective.

Bezos' bid was too high because he was trying to make a financial gain on it.

SpaceX saw past the dollar signs and realized that being selected by NASA for a manned lunar landing mission is going to be ten to fifteen times cooler than anything they have done yet.  OMFG.

/ Apollo didn't make money either, so what!

I hate to tell you this, but ALL the Apollo contractors made money.  And SpaceX hopes to make money off the contract though the non-cost-plus contract does not guarantee it.  It did not hurt that SpaceX was already developing Starship for other reasons.

The reason why Blue's bid was so high is because the companies involved with the so-called National team are inefficient. Bezos really wants to do this and if he could have made a lower bid to guarantee a win, he would have.

Think of him like Carnegie. If workers are given a raise, what will they spend it on? Donations to homophobic churches, gay conversion therapy, MAGA hats?
If he spends it on spaceflight it will better all mankind.

what? you believe that draft-dodging, union-busting, half-his-age-marrying, old scottish railroad tycoon underpaid his workers because he feared they wouldn't be liberal enough in their personal lives?

hahaha, no. he underpaid them, and shied away from giving funds directly to people in need, because he thought it would encourage "vice" -like gambling and drinking and palling around with hookers. NO WHERE do we see evidence he was afraid poor people would use their money -IF they had any- to be TOO "socially conservative".

lol!

I worded that poorly. Think LIKE Carnegie. Mentally justify not giving to the proletariat because they will engage in what you deem immoral behaviors, and instead donate to things like creating the library and museum system, or in Bezos case space flight. The actual reasons are immaterial the result is the same.
