You'd think they would play the interview portion they were conducting when the gunshots rang out.

North Carolina... that's a tough call.  I mean, yeah it could be a drive by, but it could just as likely be a bunch of drunk rednecks shooting off their AR-15s into the air from the back of moving a pickup truck.

Not that both aren't terrifying... or dangerous.

Even the language we use isn't nearly strong enough. She said "carelessness". I mean, people randomly shooting into a neighborhood isn't careless, it's the opposite. It's on purpose, either to spread fear or to actually murder someone. It's not an accident for fark's sake.

This happened in Durham. I am unaware of any good guys in Durham. Chapel Hill? Possible...

The shooting happened about a block away from the Durham Police Department.

"We cover shootings here in Durham nearly every day..."

You say that, and yet there are absolutely people who pick up guns and can only think "heehee rooty-tooty-point-n-shooty go pewpewpew bangbang!", YouTube is full of them.

We see guns being shot off willy-nilly, basically as noisemakers, often even at events like weddings, all across the planet, sometimes with deadly results.

People don't need to be malevolent or murderous, there are plenty of people that really are just that stupid and, yes, careless.

Ha, you want that to be true sooooo badly.

It's not, though.

"Only to witness someone in a passing light-colored vehicle," described Lavigne. "At least two suspects we saw were inside [the car], firing several shots into the neighborhood."

This. From my experience, it's like being surprised to hear gunshots/shooting when you're in ghetto Detroit.

I mean, sure, we can have long discussions on just how farked up our system is to have created the conditions that have spawned gangs, lawlessness, and the kind of bullshiat that goes on in the worst parts of cities. Doing so, however, would require a significant part of the White Upper Middle Class, the Rich, and even the Political leaders to admit to a long and determined series of policies and efforts specifically designed to basically create these literal 3rd-world hellhole communities in the first place.

I mean, we've basically ensured they have little access to any real education, we've ensured they have no economic prospects. We've vilified the communities and torn apart families all while forcing them to endure the scorn, hate, fear, and bigotry of the rest of society.  We've backed them into corners where crime and violence are basically about survival, not real malice.

Then people clutch their pearls and tremble in fear and outrage that such violence could happen in "their" community!   Usually, the news and the White folks don't even get to this point unless it either affects them, or it's related to some other hot topic, like gunviolence.

Poor resident of said Ghetto stabs his girlfriend to death? Meh.

Drug buyer attacks and kills his dealer for not handing over the drugs? yawn.

Drug gang hits another drug gang because of an ongoing dispute caused, basically, by a lack of resources and no education on how to solve the problem otherwise, and use guns to do it? ZOMG NATIONAL NEWS GUN VIOLENCE EVERYONE COME SEE THE GUN VIOLENCE.

And yes, we have mountains of scientific evidence and studies proving the impacts that systemic racism, neglect, poor education, and lack of social/economic support and opportunities have on these communities. Likewise, we have similar mounds of evidence demonstrating that investing in programs that directly address those issues...even just education on basic social skills and conflict resolution...have equally massive positive impacts by dramatically lowering the violence rates (guns included) in those communities.

It's not even controversial, the evidence has been building up for decades.

But, again, it's hard and we just don't have the money and but that's socialism. Easier to just try and blunt the damage, paint over the mold covering the walls, ignore the crumbling foundations, and pretend that if we just make this one policy change (for our safety!) everything will be magically fixed.

Worse than a ten year old, told to help with chores around the house, who picks up a few dirty dishes and says "there, see? I helped!"

farking disgusting all around.

austerity101: No way to stop this, yadda yadda yadda.

Plenty of ways to stop this. Many of them require white folks to admit to a lot of farkery and bigotry and having to dramatically change their behavior. Many more of them require people to stop with the stupid NIMBY bullshiat and actually invest time and effort into their communities. Still more would be *gasp*socialism!

And, above all, nearly all of them requires damn near everyone to recognize that the problem's a hell of a lot bigger than any one facet/symptom, stop pointing fingers and fighting over ideological red herrings, and agree on investing in the common good to fix the core of society as a whole.  ANd, it requires compromise. Real, logical, honest compromise.

Not just compromise on paper. Not just wishlists of shiat that sounds good on paper. Not giving up and crying that the big, audacious changes aren't happening RIGHT NOW, but instead breaking things apart into smaller chunks and focusing on fixing the major problems (education, social support, access to healthcare, economic equity/access, etc.) in comprehensive ways as branches of a larger whole.

None of this is ever going to be a "one and done" solution. It's going to take years of work, tweaks, and commitment to use scientific evidence and data to change the root causes, and then build on top of the first round of improvements. Brick by brick.

And undermining successful businesses run by minorities through seriously shady business practices, doing everything possible to destroy and deny said communities any sort of voice...

Yeah.

The whole system really is suffering because we intentionally allowed ignorance, bigotry, hatred, and outright greed to determine who was and was not allowed to be considered a 'real person', so to speak.

Nothing has changed, save for the complexity of the systems being used to oppress and destroy lives for the fun and profit of the affluent few.

ex resident of Cary...

I remember playing gigs in Chapel Hill and then going home at 2-3AM and as soon as I got into Cary, I would be followed all the way home by a Cary police. Making sure I stopped at stop signs, red lights, using my turn signal, going the speed limit.

One night after following me home, I got out of the car and walked over to the cop...

"We do this every stinking weekend, please stop following me home"

"Nah, I'm bored, it gives me something to do"

At least they're honest. When I lived/worked near Boulder, the Boulder cops would do practically the same thing, only they'd come up with bullshiat reasons to do it and harass you if you stepped one inch out of line.

One evening I was working the late shift, and me and a bunch of friends got out at around Midnight. We're all starving and figure we'll go have food, but the options are either "bar/restaurant" or fast food.  So, we all convene at a bar near to work that has great food.

I don't drink since I really can't drink, so I have dinner hang out for a while, and then head home.

I'm not even out of the bar's parking lot, though, when Boulder PD pulls my ass over and start the 'have you been drinking tonight?" spiel, to the point of asking me to get out and do a field sobriety test, etc.

Like, FFS, I'm there for 45 minutes trying to prove that I'm not farking drunk (just exhausted), because I happened to leave a bar.

How bored and/or thuggish do you have to be to use "subject left bar parking lot" as PC to pull someone over and make them prove they're sober?

I felt really bad one night after a gig in Chapel Hill. I invited a co-worker to see my band. The night's over and everyone is going to Waffle House after the gig. We get in our cars and head out. My friend was behind me, and he gets pulled over. I also pulled over to wait for him. I stayed in my car.

About 10 mins later the cop takes off and my friend walks over to the car...

"Stek, its so lucky that I wasn't drinking, once the cop found out I was straight, he threw my license, insurance and registration back at me and told me he just wasted 10 minutes of his time."
