He also directed Pan's Labyrinth, and the amazing Devil's Backbone.

Don't forget The Shape of Water. I think that's what got the Navy's attention.

When I was a kid I always thought bullfighters were doing something super cool when they were yelling "Toro!" as a bull went flying by.

I grew up and learned Spanish and was very disappointed to find out that the bullfighters, the picadors, and the clowns were all just basically yelling "Bull! Bull! Over here! Bull! Look! Bull!" It's a bit less impressive when it doesn't sound exotic and foreign.

That said, "Del Toro" means "of the bull". So either his mother's a cow or he's literally bullshiat.

Del Toro would enter the Pentagon at a transformational moment for the Navy, which is struggling to align flat budgets with a modernization plan that calls for new classes of nuclear-powered submarines, a new 6th-generation fighter and new frigates and destroyers.

Yeah... it's a transformation they should have began over a decade ago...

Full Disclosure: I love this guy.  He thinks... and that's all he does.  Is a Republican or Democrat?  I honestly couldn't tell you and I honestly don't care.  He's a former Pentagon Advisor... with three daughters adopted from China and Africa.  He seems immune to ideological trappings and instead just goes for optimal outcomes and let's others try to pigeonhole that into the neat little political boxes that they simply will not conform to.  He's a guy who understands that what we can and cannot do is far more important than whatever idealized fantasy worlds we like to conjure up for ourselves about what "should be."

I too was thinking our navy was going to be made of fishmen...but then I remembered they're called frogmen and we really should be hiring PT Anderson for his groundbreaking frog scene in Magnolia.

If an two actors could run the country successfully, what could go wrong with the navy?

Kidding. This guy seems legit.

NephilimNexus: struggling to align flat budgets

Part of our budget problem is clearly illustrated by the use of the term "flat" to describe a budget that has grown at twice the rate of inflation over the last 20 years.

Calling that a flat budget is like calling Dolly Parton flat-chested.

If you see something that looks like a star
And it's shooting up out of the ground
And your head is spinning from a loud guitar
And you just can't escape from the sound
Don't worry too much, it'll happen to you
We were children once, playing with toys

Yep, Barnett is always a good read. That said, he was also pretty excited by the prospect of America's deep dive into what he called nation building. His main reason was that the biggest conflict in the world was between those who sought to disconnect people from globalization and those that sought to build those connections to allow people to thrive in a capitalist society. He sees the US as too heavily invested in war, and not enough in peace building. During the drive to invade Iraq, he thought that the US military was one of the best organizations to adapt fast to the role of nation building and reconnecting, which as we all know turned out to be pretty off base. That said, he did have an interesting way of looking at the world, particularly via his "Pentagon's New Map," where he divided the world into globalization's core, and the non-integrating Gap, or places where globalization had not yet achieved its full potential.
