Now that twittler isn't president* and they no longer hold those positions I think it is reasonable to have SOME hope that the rules have changed.

I don't think Barr cares about any of it. He was asked about how he felt about how history would remember him and he basically said, "who cares? I'll be dead."

I really hope that there is eventually some accountability for the last four years but I can pretty much guarantee that Barr is not scared of any demands or subpoenas from Democrats.

FTFA: To carry out that threat, Democrats would need the support of at least one Republican given the committee's even split between the parties.

They're not demanding. They're not even asking. They're asking Republicans to allow them to issue a subpoena. They're doing farking nothing here.

How else should they issue a subpoena, if Senate rules require them to get a majority of the committee (which means at least one Republican)?

Democrats chose to split committees 50/50. They were under no obligation to do that. Don't give me Senate rules are stopping Democrats when Democrats can dictate Senate rules.

And even if they get it, they will contend with years of frivolous lawsuits and appeals.

The standard was set over the last four years. GOPers will obstruct and Dems will write angry letters.

So, what are you going to do after they wipe their asses with those summons?

Or, if you do get them to come in how are you going to handle that sudden onset of amnesia?

Because if you don't have a plan for that, then you're still just dicking around.

"Former Attorneys General Barr and Sessions and other officials who were involved must testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee under oath. If they refuse, they are subject to being subpoenaed and compelled to testify under oath," the Democratic leaders continued.

To carry out that threat, Democrats would need the support of at least one Republican given the committee's even split between the parties.

By never allowing them equal representation on committees in the first place.

The D's hold the majority in the chamber, and if we didn't have Shiatweasle Shumer as the "majority" leader, that would be reflected in committee assignments.   Can you imagine Lyndon Johnson agreeing to that shiat?

So take it up with the Senate 4 months ago?

I agree, they shouldn't have done that. Now that they have, they're bound by the rules they created. I suppose they could un-write those rules first (some changes only require 50+theVP, right?), and I don't really object to that.

I was speaking to the rules as currently agreed on, not from my blue-sky "fark the GOP as hard as we legislatively/representatively can" bias.

Some of you should read this article. You're not getting how this works.

Initially, Mr. McConnell held up the resolution-which is typically a routine step-until Republicans got a commitment from Democrats to preserve the legislative filibuster, a Senate rule that requires 60 votes to advance most legislation, giving members of the minority party influence of the Senate agenda. But he lifted his objection last week after moderate Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona reaffirmed their longstanding support for the filibuster.

As talks dragged on, Republicans still were running most committees. In some cases, Republicans who are term-limited for chairmanships still held the gavel. In other cases, committees had no chairs because of Republican retirements. The limbo also left freshman senators without committee assignments.

That made it hard for Democrats to get things done without either unanimous consent from all 100 senators or cooperation from GOP colleagues still running committees.

The setup created headaches for Democrats, stuck in negotiations with Republicans to hand over the keys to the Senate.
