It is often difficult for Americans who have spent their lives on the coasts or east of the Mississippi River to understand that EVERYTHING in the Intermountain West is conditioned by water and its availability or lack thereof. Everything. Economics, religion, politics, ecology, identity.

Biden needs to get the ball rolling on desalination plants for the west coast and Texas gulf coast before we have a major problem.

There are many excellent books on water and politics, economics, war, etc.

Start with this one; it ought to be required reading.

A couple of sentences from the article need fixing.

One of Bundy's men, Robert LaVoy Finicum, was killed by law enforcement committed suicide by cop during that takeover.

.....

Now, among the posters hanging in Nielsen's Klamath Basin tent is Finicum's rallying cry: "There are things more important than your life and freedom is one of them. I am prepared to defend freedom I farked around and found out!"

From what I hear, he was a bit of a Mr. Bumble as well. He took on "troubled kids" from the courts, but as soon as they arrived, they were put straight to work on his plantation ranch and worked without pay like slaves. And for each slave he got, Uncle Sucker would send him a sweet sweet check each month. Total scumbag whom I 'm glad AF now roasts in Hell.

"We're here because we're trying to stand up for our private property," Nielsen said. "We've been trying to be nice, but we're getting to the end of the rope. You just go in there and pull the bulkheads and open the headgates."

"We're going to do it peacefully," he added, "unless the federal government turns on us like they usually do."

I suspect that "going in there and pulling the bulkheads open" will be anything but peaceful.

Oh great, another Klamath Basin story that leaves out a bunch of important information to turn it into a story about the Bundys.

-The farmers in the area are receiving a $15 million government bailout.

-They were already expecting to receive only 10% of their normal water, so almost nothing got planted. At this point there is nothing to water. Forcing the locks open is beyond pointless.

-Most of the locals want to work with the government and are pissed about a bunch of outsiders coming in and turning an agricultural issue into a "MAH FREEDUMS!" protest.

But, you know, gotta get those clicks, so the story is about redneck farmers versus endangered species and native tribes.

Changed planes through Phoenix en route to the west coast when America West Airlines was still a thing. Even when completely indoors in PH Skyharbor Airport with air conditioning on full blast you learned to stay the Hell away from the windows.

Just a thought, but why didn't they buy farms in areas that naturally had water?  I don't understand why the government has to spend huge sums to turn deserts into arable land when the US has huge swaths of farmland with adequte water supplies.

They choose to live there, they can fund it themselves. CA already is and so is TX, so the FED shouldn't have to do anything.

He simply needs to give a "shoot on site" order for anyone trying to forcefully open the gates.

Farmers are the most entitled a-holes ever.  While they may have had rights to water for 100 years someone else has had rights for 150 years.  It's a lack of coordination among these rights holders that has exacerbated this issue.  It's why a lot of farmers planted so many Almond trees.  Big money in that and the farmers felt entitled to their full allotment of water at the expense of anyone and everything else.   The farmers would be totally fine with salt from the Bay flooding into the Delta.

Desalination can produce drinking-water levels of clean water. But I don't think any amount of desalination could produce the amount we've been using to make the desert southwest into arable land.

Here...found a more nuanced article from a local source:

https://www.heraldandnews.com/news/local_news/few-klamath-project-irrigators-involved-in-protest-at-canal/article_5a11a82a-8385-5723-860c-e47715be6b7c.html

I grew up in that area, and as much as I love to dunk on Klamath Falls, most of the farming community isn't as batshiat crazy as some of these news stories would have you believe. Let's go back to making fun of K Falls for their idiots who showed up armed to the teeth to defend against invading busloads of antifa last year.

The energy costs are enormous, and the bigger deal on the energy front is getting the water hundreds if not thousands of feet uphill to the farms.

Here, let me Google that for you:

16 inches of rain and 38 inches of snow per year:
https://www.oregon.gov/bcd/documents/brochures/3660.pdf

From Oregon State University, "In a dryland area, if you grow food you have an ethical responsibility to collect rainwater."

Only evangelicals could be this butthurt over not being able to kill endangered species that they'd ignore mana falling from heaven just to pwn a lib. Unreal.

I live on an artesian aquifer and am fearful of the day a corporate giant like Nestlé decides they want to set up a bottling operation to "bring jobs".   the people around here are dumb enough to think that short-term tax revenue trumps long-term viability.
