I listened to Use Your Illusions I&II not long ago after a loooooong time and was struck by how well the music has aged. They were a really good rock and roll band.

And then Axl starts screeching like a cat being stepped on and you're like "Holy Jesus, how was this ever popular?" and you kind of feel sad that the rest of the band's competence gets instantly overshadowed.

Appetite is one of the best rock alums ever made. They caused everyone to take off their makeup , it wasn't Nirvana. Use Your Illusion 1& 2 had one great album in it with a lot of filler. I actually haven't paid attention to the rest.

D.A.D. - No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims should be on the list. Probably the best front-to-back albums from that genre/era (if you discount Appetite).
Also, Badlands debut album would probably be 2nd on my list from that era, but the album certainly isn't glam.

I am not a Gunners fan but I agree Appetite for Destruction was the best mainstream music happening in the late 1980's.

The whole era sucked in my opinion, but they were the best of a terrible bunch I'll give them that.

I was so pleased when the 90's gave us so many new sounds which didn't include the overproduced pap which was the late 80's. Nirvana and the grunge scene were a huge (and much simpler) improvement on the million dollar sounds of 80's rock while 90's electronic music was a massive improvement over the synth sounds of 80's pop/glam bands.

IT'S ALL SUBJECTIVE of course, many will completely disagree with me as is their right but I would genuinely rather stay home and be forced to watch Friends eps than have to go to a Motley Crue or Bon Jovi or Def Leppard or Poison or other 80's phenomenon concert, and I farking hate Friends.

Guns n' Roses are glam?  Is that why they toured with Metallica in '92, when Hetfield was lit on fire?  I hear Montreal was bumping' that night.

Yeah... I had a similar experience when Chinese Democracy finally came out. Axl's vocals are so terrible on that it actually damaged my enjoyment of their other stuff (particularly Use Your Illusion.) It goes way beyond losing Izzy as their best songwriter; Axl's screeching just ruins anything else he was trying to do over 13 years with a revolving door of some of the most talented hard rock musicians around.

While we're at it on this thread, Vince Neil is one of the worst vocalists that's ever walked the earth. He's even worse than Axl. All he's got going, ever, is that super-thin scratchy/screechy tone. (Axl at least had great lower vocals when he wasn't trying to be Steven Tyler, or whatever.) When they were in a half-punk bash-it-out attitude on Too Fast for Love and Shout at the Devil, it didn't matter and those albums are good. But everything afterward... yikes.

Also, here's Rob Halford rolling through pretty much every vocal trick Axl ever had, all in one song from back in 1977:

All I see in this thread are a bunch of farkers who wouldn't know fun if it bit them on the ass.

GnR was the ultimate hair band, and, by merely existing, made the rest of the music industry go into the coma of bullshiat that was grunge.

Also, Kiss is glam. Bowie is glam. Poison was glam(ish). Most of these are hair bands.

People say similar things about Winger.  Winger had one of the best guitarists of all time and a really good bass player... Playing simple music.

If by "alum" you mean "a colorless astringent compound that is a hydrated double sulfate of aluminum and potassium, used in solution medicinally and in dyeing and tanning", then I'd have to agree.

Otherwise, all that whole genre did was re-assert corporate rock and invigorate the "rock star" myth.  A pox upon it..

NGL, while I liked the eponymous first LA Guns album, I love every track on Cocked and Loaded. I hated metal at the time and still bugged out on that album. I always thought it was Phil, the Brit, and his style and attitude that gave them the thing I liked. Leave it to a Brit to know how to glam it up in the right direction.

When it comes to 80s glam though, no one....NO ONE...outdid Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone. No one. NO ONEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

(Loudness - Thunder In The East)

Great call - great album.  Total hair metal, but done right.  Great guitar playing on this album.

Hair metal lists are more subjective than many.  I grew up in this era and liked *some* hair metal, but not others.  I think many my age feel the same.  For example I'd never put Cinderella or Poison on my list, but Loudness and Dokken are definitely missing.  But I know people who swear by Poison and that's ok.  This style of music really toed the line of good and bad taste and it was easy to cross into cheese, very quickly.  But it also produced some genuinely great music that holds up incredibly well today:  Round and Round, Welcome To The Jungle, Breaking The Chains, Crazy Nights, etc.  It also surfaced some pretty incredible guitar players:  Warren DeMartini (Ratt, and Robbin Crosby was no slouch either), Akira Takasaki, George Lynch, Jake E. Lee, Vito Bratta, Reb Beach and Nuno Bettencourt all advanced the instrument and made a lot of this music a real joy to listen to.  I appreciate "hair/glam metal" for what it is, and don't try to impose on it what it's not.
