What sector of life would you like to discuss?

Familial, romantic relationships, sexual relationships (just the sex side, not dating/marriage), education/career, friendships, meals, fitness, alchol/drug use, volunteering, shopping?  I don't have a list, but I definitely could we could all generate some pretty good examples off the top of our heads.

#1 overall, for me: starting smoking.  From financial, to run times, to relationships all negatively impacted at least a little.  All for no tangible gain.

Not learning another language in college.  Like most people, I was exempted from the foreign language requirement because I had enough HS Spanish, and it never occurred to me that learning another language was an opportunity I missed, instead of a requirement I could max my way out of.

Just the usual trust issues regarding flatulence - but I'm wealthy enough that I can throw out underpants rather than dealing with laundry shame.

Nah. Are there things that I would do different, knowing what I know now?  Of course; but then how would I know to do them differently if I hadn't done them wrong in the first place?  We're getting into paradox territory. "I need my pain," certainly more that God needs a starship.  You know what?  I regret seeing Star Trek V more than once. What a turd that thing was.

Time is a funny thing, mostly because what I might, at certain junctures, those junctures usually being the culmination of what I thought was a strong choice blowing up in my face, have called my biggest regrets tend to turn out to have shaped present opportunities for my future happiness. Put simply, I couldnt possibly erase choices I made that didn't end well without destroying the circumstances leading to my present happiness.

Regret, then, if I have any, I would imagine, would simply be calamity-bred opportunities upon which I failed to capitalize, but if I am here and I am happy as a result, I cannot possibly regret.

And if I am here and I am not happy as a result, I can usually count on some part of that misery as a guide out of it.

Why pick on regrets? Because of that damn song? It's like asking if you've never sneezed or worn black shoes. It's a human emotion, but once people get the wind up that something is looked down on, memory (or reporting it) goes out the window.

The last few years I've been so miserable I can't believe they wouldn't have been better off without me around.

Took a job to get a 10k raise, then a year later the company got bought out and cut my pay 40k. If I didnt take it than I would still be with the other company making far far more.

On the relationship side there are 2 females in my life I regret not trying to do more with but I was afraid to ruin my friendship.

I have farked up many times in my life that I could regret. But I do not. I own my life and all the farkups. They make me, me. Knowing now what I did not then would have changed many things I did. I am sorry to the guy I threw a pop bottle onto his window from a bridge. Also the guy I rolled down a rock into his car from a cliff. I was an idiot and a drugged out 11 year old and had no idea back then. Now that I am an adult I use guns that are so much better at causing destruction.

Regrets?  Pick a topic!

Romance?  Not even trying to be appealing for 15 years.  Or how about not trying to communicate even the basic feelings for any of the women I was around (granted, most were co-workers, but hell, try)  Or how about taking nearly a decade to confess to wanting to date someone (even knowing with 95% certainty it was going to be a no [and was])

Schooling?  Oh giving up part way through high school, never really trying through college and eventually leaving with nothing but debt?

Employment?  Being the arrogant new guy costing me the first big boy job, leading to a full year of unemployment?  Or losing the job that came after that 6 years later because I couldn't tolerate golden children or just get over inherent unfairness/stupidity.  Or losing the one after that because the boss annoyed the shiat out of me

Financial?  College debt for nothing, maxing out a credit card at 20, being behind on retirement planning, not owning a home, take a shot

How about all the time wasted playing games with no story, no meaning beyond just grinding?  Or the hobbies picked up and discarded?  Or the various people who've fallen out of my world because I never bothered to maintain relationships?

I mean, seriously, pick a topic, pull out a glass and a bottle, and grab a seat.

So - I kind of had the usual mid-life crisis a little early.. about 10 years ago ( age 35ish), when my much loved uncle died. But what I mostly learned, when the storm clouds cleared was that I mostly like who I am, and mostly don't really have giant regrets that gnaw at me. I've lived my life honestly and from my current perspective, it all led to here, which is pretty decent.

But I do have this one. When I was senior in high school I had a friend who was a couple of years older than me, and he had a sister who was my age, and their mom was my science teacher and anyway, for whatever reason I was at their place on a Saturday morning but for whatever reason I was there alone with just her and her friend who were off doing girl things in their room while I was at the kitchen table doing like ad&d shiat. And then she comes out in just a cute little black bra and is like "heyyyy Goats, check out my new bra, what do you think?" -- and I was all "oh.. uh... nice paisleys and stuff..." - She was a small, willowy, a-cup blonde with freckles and super nice to boot. When I was about 25 I realized she might have been hitting on me and I could have at least flirted back. Oh well.

I've got it down to the point where it only takes me about a week to realize someone might have flirted with me. Took about 25 years to get to this point. I figure that if I live to be 65, I might get it down to a useful few hours.

It may have seemed like a good idea, this whole life thing. When we are young and we wonder what we will become, when life had potential for good things to happen. No one plans to be one of "those whose only purpose seems to be to serve as a warning to others", and yet it happens all so frequently. Perhaps if we knew what the future held, the risk is many would not go through with it.
