If my daughter decided she was a lesbian in middle school  I would have been very supportive. I guess it is the parents of boys that get all hot and bothered.

Just call it a Christian Mingle meeting and those parents will not only be cool with it, but show up to troll for new strange.

My daughter started questioning herself in middle school. She finally approached us after her junior year and said she was gay. Her Mom and I said "Duh". Then we ordered pizza.

I am still waiting for a grandchild but didn't want one until she graduated college. Don't even care if she married to either sex before pregnant now.

OK, I'll be "that guy" who read TFA, but it seems at issue here is whether or not parental permission is required to join the group.

Maybe that's a hidden way of making it more difficult to join, (if a child isn't ready to let their parent(s) know) - I'm not sure.

So, who knows, seeing that the oh-so-wonderful Stand Together for Freedom is involved, but that's the public statement.

When I saw the headline, I thought "Boy, this sounds like they're worried about gay people recruiting their children."

And sure enough:

"The high attendance and intense public debate can be partially attributed to the group Stand Together for Freedom, which rallied its members to protest against the GSA meetings. In a flier posted to the group's Facebook page, it said GSA is a 'nationally organized effort to introduce and recruit children deliberately to undermine parental authority into immoral and risky behavior.'"

I get no points, because damn that was predictable.

Always be sure to get parental permission before being gay, kids.

My brother and his wife send her kid from a previous marriage to a school where if you come out as gay or get pregnant you are deemed to be "offending the Christian message of the school" and are expelled immediately. If you are pregnant you can come back after babby is formed only if you stand up in front of the entire school begging forgiveness in the eyes of god. If you're LGBT, you're banned for life.

They act very nice when you talk to them. "Oh why don't you come to church with us on Sunday?!"

Fark these people.

The silver lining to this bullshiat is that they're making religion and right-wing politics radioactive to the younger generations. They're revealing the petty authoritarianism, selfishness, and bigotry absolutely essential to conservative politics - and to a different degree for religion itself.

It sucks for people in the short run, but in the long run they're going to harm the fark out of right-wing politics and religion which is a very, very good thing for both America and humanity. Assuming the reprobates don't have a successful coup next time, and effectively end any actual representation in government.

So how are the adults going to prevent kids from meeting over lunch?

The kids could all just sit at a table and eat and talk.

Are the adults going to designate a gay table and then have an adult standing next to it to make sure no kid sits there?

Also these kids are awesome says middle aged cisgendered hetero dad.

Never forget that this was the de facto republican position regarding our gay and lesbian neighbors for decades.

The GSA meetings in my school were secret- you couldn't talk about when or where they were, or who was there. This was because on several occasions people would throw homemade explosives in the classroom.

You couldn't talk about who was in attendance for fear of outing someone, of course.

I am running into this as a parent trying to explain to my parents (grandparents) how I am choosing to raise my kids.

Apparently offering kids choices and having discussions about choices is anathema to parenting.  Asking my kids what they want to eat vs. forcing them to eat whatever I choose, is a bad thing.

Boomers: "Young adults make terrible choices."
Also Boomers: Never let their kids learn how to make choices, shocked to learn they then make bad ones.

Some kids want to have a group to promote understanding and supporting each other.  Some of their parents don't want this because there's not enough hate against gay people.

Did I get that wrong.  I hope so.

Legally, you are right.

Yeah, I think the deal here was requiring parental permission, and whether the group was an informal or formal one, and which would need parental permission, and the definitions of "formal" and "informal" and ghjosdjkljkdfdfh

IE, there have been instances where a school banned all clubs to prevent a GSA or similar from forming.

"Hurr, durr... God told me to come here to pray away the dark forces..."

Once again, every iota of societal progress has to be wrestled away from the fearful, ignorant assholes who make up a not-insignificant portion of America.

I just wish you people could feel shame to the degree that the rest of us can feel contempt.

The problem is that some of the younger generation are being successfully indoctrinated, and the older right-wingers are doing everything they can right now to destroy voting rights.  If they succeed, their right-wing descendants will be a ruling minority, even more so than today.
