It's a starter job, you're supposed to be born white, rich, and with stock options from Apple 30 years ago, and not have to do the starter job. These people are just so entitled and lazy.

I've had a few students like this in college. One was living in her car. Another the library. One was out of class only one day the whole semester, and to document it as excused brought me a copy of a court docket where she was filing a restraining order against her abusive partner who had thrown her out of their apartment. I have no idea how colleges, which have all sorts of financial aid options, can't figure out how to get a full-time student some sort of campus housing. Maybe we should set up a new "office of homeless housing" and hire a dean and a small staff to work on it.

What is your point? Would you rather the media didn't pay attention to these stories sometimes? Are you more comfortable with the black and white presentation of shiny happy people vs abject misery and defeat? Because we read about both of those extremes all the time.
I don't understand your criticism of a critical revelation of someone succeeding in a difficult set of circumstances.

She's probably been looking around at jobs with relatively high starting pay for low education investment.  Any other government type job, with only a high school diploma, is maybe going to pay $10-12 an hour, with pretty good benefits.

A new patrolman, right out of the academy, is about $17 an hour.  Good benefits, but high risk.  She's probably used to risk, may be even has experience dealing with domestic violence, and she'll have weapons.

One option she could consider is the military.  The pay is lousy, but housing, food, and education are included.  And, she would have a network of support for career placement later on.

Law enforcement is a great way out of her shiat town. Once she's got academy, POST cert, and a year of probation under her belt, she can lateral to almost any other agency in the country, and get out of police work into a real profession.

I would not join the military for nothing. I have respect for those who serve, but all you are is just a casualty so some corporation or arms-dealers can make a profit

Definitely a better option than law enforcement right now and comes with other benefits.

This young woman is amazing, but lots of predictable comments in this thread from people who lack her courage and resolve, which are not widely appreciated traits in the U.S. today.
