I am shocked and extremely pleased.
After paying Wall Street bonuses during the Great Recession, Obama/Biden kicked so many working class off food stamps.

I admit it guys. He has done the right thing for once.

In a country awash with food, denying people food stamps should fill anyone who considers themself a Christian with revulsion.

If we're not going to arbitrarily starve children can we even call this America anymore?

The cruelty was the point. Authoritarians want the "nonbelievers" to suffer.

Wow...

That's all I can say.  The two of you summed up our farked up reality in two posts.

If you find yourself not being okay with the government providing free meals to children you're f*cked beyond belief

All I ask is that instead of death my tax money goes to making sure no child ever goes hungry. It's not too much to ask.

In a country that annually throws out millions of tons of food that there is food insecurity is an appalling failure.

Someone explain why all school meals shouldn't be 100% cost free. I'll wait.

Honestly? The whole school lunch thing is dumb. Just give them all lunch and be done with it.

I've heard rationales claiming that being poor is basically child abuse.

"If you really loved your child, you'd (insert entire life plan program involving somehow getting into a competitive school, paying tuition, and finding a better job with your new four-year degree while somehow raising kids and holding a full-time minimum-wage position, usually suggested by someone who got a very modest quarter-million dollar handout from his parents.)

"We hate the poor because poverty traps are a myth!"

Is it really arbitrary though? Or is it only those people?

Expenditures like that can only be justified if they are somehow related to football.

We were really only offered one choice in 2020 - an old white man. We chose one.
Maybe we could have chosen better (Bernie)  - but I know for shiat sure we could have chosen worse.

To be eligible for food stamps, you should just have to farking ask for them. That's it. And the rules on what you can buy with them should be WAY more relaxed.

And if you're a kid in a public school, you absolutely should be eligible for a free school lunch. The very concept of 'lunch debt' is farking barbaric.

My biatching aside, this is still a positive step forward, and makes me feel a little better about Biden. Of course, my opinion is still fairly negative today after the news that his DoJ will continue defending religious schools' 'right' to be shiatty to LGBT+ people and will fight to prevent people in Puerto Rico from receiving disability benefits, so y'know, hits and misses.

/Still better than Trump.
//Still have very little hope for the future as long as the Democrats continue to care more about keeping a couple of "Democrats" in red state seats instead of actually helping the country and probably picking up a bunch more seats in the process.

Fun math:

Trump's tax cut cost about $150 billion a year
(conservatively, it's almost double if some of the provisions were not rolled back)

This would have saved about 2.5 billion a year.

So in total, this cut to a critical program for the poor would have helped pay %1.6 of the tax cut for the rich.

Because, silly, that would be SOCIALISM *GASP*. And socialism is bad. My friend, Becky, injected 37 socialisms into her eyeballs and died.

Also this big guy, yuge not a crier, this big guy with tears in his eyes said "Sir" they call me sir... "Sir, we cannot possibly give these children free lunch". Nobody knew that we couldn't do free lunch. Also, have you read Hillary's emails or seen Hunter Biden's sekrit files?

At least basic stuff? Yes, absolutely. Food, along with clean water, basic shelter (including the appropriate heating/cooling for the climate), electricity and healthcare, just for starters, should be basic human rights. We're one of the wealthiest, most powerful countries in the history of humanity; the fact that any of our people die due to poverty is a goddamn disgrace.

But just making food stamps easier to access seems like a slightly more realistic step. Albeit still pretty unrealistic as long as we continue to pretend unchecked capitalism is anything more than repackaged feudalism.

Live by the Executive Order, die by the Executive Order.

Without a working legislature, this is what we are now. Every 4 years, all temporary policies can be reversed. Exhilarating! Isn't it Marijuana Entrepreneurs? You're entire life can flip right into a decade long prison sentence with the simple signing of an Executive Order. (Biden is no friend of cannabis. Sleep tight.)

This is the Gift of Manchin, the Republicans, and Trump.

No we're not.  The owners of this country are the wealthiest in the history of humanity, but the nation as a whole, and most of the people who live here are suffering in poverty.

That's a nearly impossible challenge based on your conditions.  But I like a challenge.  Here we go:

Artistically, you are going to completely trash all stories and movies with characters that are supposed to be sympathetic based on poverty.   What is more dramatically powerful than an inner city kid that can't focus because he is hungry?

You are taking a flame thrower to Dickensian characters in any TV show or movie if you have nothing but a well-fed students.  How are we supposed to emotionally connect with the characters and sympathise with their plight if they are having big ol'sammiches every day.  You sir do not care about art, the entertainment industry and all you are doing is masking the bigger issue of poverty.

PlaidJaguar: the founding fathers, who intentionally designed a government to allow their empowered and wealthy minority to maintain power and control over the labor class.

There you go, bringing class into it again... :-)

If we had a legislature that is supposed to do what it designed for (deliberating, compromising, improving), instead of working for 2/6 years to get elected to another 2/6 year term, this wouldn't be an issue.

But politicians seem to be about power, money, and in the case of Republicans, Trump. That's it. Nothing else.

Oh sure, every once in a while, you get a real politician, like AOC, who will fight the good fight. But that's really, really rare nowadays. (And I disagree with a lot of her policies, but I believe she believes she's doing the "right thing")

Its not about re-election, not directly.  Re-election is just part of the game to make sure your wife/brother/sister-in-law/son keep their no-show job at the think tank funded by the Koch brothers and that you'll be able to buy your million dollar country home for $98,000 and the landscaping all gets done for free.

And if you're a good boy for long enough, you will get your own no-show lobbying or think tank job, or even sit on a few boards, making six figures meeting once a month for a 3 martini lunch.

But of course, can't blame the son for the father's sins.  It's why we can't discuss racism in America.

But be a poor kid.... and you need to attone for your father's sins.

OK, so if you wanna buy "poverty = child abuse" the best thing to do is to ensure that no one is poor, right? So give people money, and give kids their food for free. Poverty solved!

Don't most of those subsidies go to big agribusiness? Something tells me there are other ways we can regulate supply and price without throwing piles of cash at giant corporations.

Y'see, if the poor kids get free lunches, they might start to think of themselves like actual human beings instead of automatons whose existence depends on how much money the real people can get for their labor.
