He's was still alive?

Bronson had become the star of a franchise.  He wasn't going to be the star of this movie.

He may have been complaining about his character dying but what he really wanted was for the movie to be re-written with him as the hero.

Either that or his agent misled him about how big his role would be -- which is a real possibility.

Billy Crystal throwing him under the bus after Bronson has been in the ground for almost 20 years is really tacky though.  His version of the story makes Billy look really good as does every story that Billy tells.

He's got his own need to be the star all the time.

Eh, fits Bronson's MO.

From the gossip I recall over the years, he had Death Wish's protagonist remade for him because he thought the original character from the novel was too intellectual for him to sell, and accosted either Anthony Quinn or Kirk Douglas about their masculinity in being in the Van Gogh movie Lust for Life that won them awards.

Bronson's life arc was pretty interesting at least. Wikipedia page is worth a read.

/Ripley's Believe It Or Not guy did quite well. Oscars appearances, not so much, I recall

Jack Palance is a better fit in the role anyways. He plays the perfect straight man, and seems better as an old, gruff cowboy. Besides, I think it would have been too hokey if Bronson was the cowboy in City Slickers, and he had the scene where Billy Crystal pulls out the harmonica to play. Too much "Once Upon a Time in the West".

I attended a luncheon in 1992 where Tommy Lee Jones was a guest speaker. I forgot how the subject came up, but he said he was offered the role of Curly but turned it down because, and I quote, "that screenplay was one of the stupidest things I ever read in my life".

So I guess he could not sanction Billy Crystal's buffoonery any more than he could Jim Carrey's.

SpectroBoy: He's was still alive?

I thought the same thing, but I think his real opposition to this film is that it wasn't produced by Cannon.

It sounds a tad imbellished.

Bronson frustratingly yelling "I'm dead on page 53," I'm betting he was more upset over the "page 53" part.
Average movie scripts are between 110 and 120 pages, with a formula of one page per minute of runtime.
IIRC, it's 20 minutes into City Slickers before they even arrive on the dude ranch, so Bronson's looking at an offer for a major studio movie, which he hasn't gotten for quite a while, and he only gets a handful of scenes and is killed off before the movie's even half over.

In the finished product, it feels like the Curly role was expanded quite a bit, so this was likely an early draft which Crystal focused more on his character, Stern, and Kirby.

Not to mention, by other accounts, Bronson wasn't particularly beaming with pride over the Cannon films of his latter years, especially the Death Wish sequels. He liked the million bucks he got per movie and Cannon treating him like their marquee star, but folks in interviews say he seemed kind of embarrassed about the quality of those movies. The idea that he'd throw out the Death Wish films as a "Do you know who I am?" kind of declaration seems kinda bullshiatty.

Crystal seems like someone you probably wouldn't want to hang with.  But maybe that's just how he seems now that he's old and doesn't want people to hang with him.

I think Palance had a better handle on comedic/campy roles so it was the right casting choice.

City Slickers has been running on hbo. Watched it last weekend. It's aged very well. Just as bad now as the day it crapped out of the anus of mediocrity.

I worked a single screen theater for a summer in college. We showed City Slickers for at least 10 weeks, maybe more. I had the damn thing memorized by the time I transferred to the four-plex on campus.

What can you say about Skyrocket and Buttercup?

A crazy lady left 300k to charles bronson.  Basically written on the back of a napkin to supercede her will because she had the hots for him.

https://www.thevintagenews.com/2018/11/18/charles-bronson-will/

She said if he didn't want it, he could leave it to her local library.  He said he would do that, then only offered the library 10k of the funds.

He later settled out of court with the family.

Greedy fark taking advantage of a loon when he had his own funds.
