"If you can figure out what Joe Manchin is about, let me know because I can't," said a Democratic senator who requested anonymity to comment frankly on his colleague. "I'm mystified."

I mean... how f*cking stupid are you, Senator... He says it out loud with words and sh*t. It's not a mystery.

Take away his committee assignments until he learns how to be a team player. Or he can try to keep being "the most powerful person in the Senate" from the sidelines.

Every time there is a Manchin story, you have to donate to a pac so that someone can primary him.

Reading articles about him does nothing. The only solution is to buy a better senator. That's how this works. It's exactly how it works.

You don't. You win battleground senate seats and marginalize the dickhead and his bimbo compatriot from AZ.

Really?

Kompromat.

Hold his feet to the fire.  Stick the IRS up his, and his daughter's, and his PACs ass.  Audit the ever-living-shiat out of him and where his money comes from.

Then offer to stop, if he could do us a favor...

That's great in theory... then he retaliates by voting against everything. Face it... Chuck holds absolutely no cards here. Whatever Joe wants, Joe gets.

There's really no play against Joe and he knows it. It sucks...

You solve it by winning other elections.

Manchin is in a super red state hanging on as a very moderate Democrat.  When Manchin loses his next election, that seat goes Republican.  All of this angst at him for voting the way he always has is a scapegoat for the real problem: Democrats couldn't win enough other Senate races.

2021-06-09 11:55:40 AM
Manchin is a republican that ran as a democrat because that part of west virginia is full of racist conservatives who are registered as democrats because their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were registered as democrats because before 1964, the democrats were segregationists.

He needs to be expelled from the party.

You know, Manchin gave us the solution for the filibuster, and wholeheartedly endorsed it (bringing back the talkie), but noooooooo Democrats couldn't even bother going with that. It had to be dissolution of the entire filibuster or nothing.

we had a solution and stepped on our dicks out of purity. *sigh*

Primary him with what?  A more progressive candidate?  You think that will win in West Virginia?

Well, I'm sure this will be the thread where an ideal solution everyone agrees on is finally hashed out.

The solution to the Joe Biden problem is to increase the democratic majority in the Senate in 2022.  If they have 55-56 seats, strip Manchin of his committee memberships and tell him to pound salt.

2021-06-09 12:01:05 PM
When a real democracy looks like a parliamentary system, the US version requiring a supermajority of 3/5ths just to keep from stagnating seems pretty cynical.   Actually, the Senate system is itself cynical enough. so with filibuster, they're hiding behind two proxies before the sun even rises.

LBJ would have had Manchin twisting in the wind by now. Democrats have forgotten how to use pressure.

That wont be good enough for our resident progressive brain trust. Everything must be fixed right now or they'll pout and criticize people on their own side. Repeatedly.

2021-06-09 12:02:37 PM

Troy McClure: You solve it by winning other elections.

Republicans are fixing it so that Democrats can't win other elections. Either Democrats in Congress legislate voting rights that supersede those state-level election-fixing and voter suppression laws or they don't and Republicans win. Your solution isn't a solution at all.

People who say "well, all you have to do to overcome Democratic intransigence is to also overcome Republican rat-farkery and election interference and negation" are not serious about solving the problem and they really don't care about Black people being allowed to vote.

2021-06-09 12:02:44 PM
Maybe Democrats should stop blaming a moderate from West Virginia for the fact that they can't seem to win Senate seats in Florida, Maine, or Iowa?

Manchin is literally the only Democrat that can currently win statewide in West Virginia.  If you managed to successfully primary him (unlikely), and the Turtle takes over.  Piss him off too much, and he switches parties and the Turtle takes over.

/he might not run again
//he's not up for re-election until 2024
///he might retire then
////the Dems might lose the Senate in 2022 anyways

justGreg: Maybe Democrats should stop blaming a moderate from West Virginia for the fact that they can't seem to win Senate seats in Florida, Maine, or Iowa?

Yup.

Manchin isn't really the problem, the 50 Republican Senators are the problem.  Well, that, and the unfixable issue of conservative Wyoming having the same number of Senators as liberal California but 1/68 as many people.  And the filibuster.

Arizona is a normal, purple/blue state (unlike West Virginia, which, if not the reddest state in America, is at least in the top five).

The solution for her is to primary the crap out of her.

That doesn't work in West Virginia, of course.
