He could play the guitar, Ziggy, but his taste in music more or less matched his skill level and Van Halen wasn't exactly the most difficult music. For transparency, their eponymous release knocked me over when it came out and I still enjoy it to this day. And besides, it's for us to enjoy, not EVH.

He wasted Valerie Bertinelli. Idiot.

First VH record is a classic, great songs and playing, but it needed more bottom end. Even Alex Van Halen said his drum sound wasn't as good as it could have been.

You don't get wasted and pull dumb cooze after shows playing farking Coltrane changes at 300 bpm. He knew what he was doing.

Yep. If you worry about making music for people who care about how complex and technical it is, this is what you get:

One of the greatest debut albums of all time and maybe it does need a bit more "oomph" production-wise but like "...And Justice For All", after all these years I can't imagine hearing it any other way.

I just wish Wolfie could be left alone from the shadow of his famous father.  Let the kid be Wolfie and not turn everything into Eddie.  I know Wolfie is talking more than his father ever did, but that's because Eddie was a dick and Wolfie is a nice man.

Let's judge him by his music and not his last name.  Bonham the younger has been amazing on stuff like Black Country Communion, and frankly would have been in a band without the last name.

Considering Eddie made a beeline towards the 1984 sound, I'm not surprised he wasn't into the early raw sounding stuff.

I like metal and I like rock. But I never really developed a liking for Van Halen beyond a couple of songs. I find a lot of their stuff pretty obnoxious, actually.

Jamie's Cryin'? Jump? Two of the most annoying songs ever.

Mike Soldano is the guy you want to talk to.  He had his hands on one of Eddie's amps at one time.  Said the key to it was the Variac, turning it down and starving the plate voltage got that sound.

It's not really a secret, every amp builder knows it.  Eddie discovered it because his Marshall was made to spec for Europe and not the United States so he had to use the Variac.

...now that I think about it, that might of been Dave Friedman.  Mike sold Eddie a SLO100 (a few of them actually) but I think he stuck to his own amps (and Jet City's).  I know Dave was modifying and repairing amps for a long while.

Eddie was a tinkerer.  If you watch videos of him in his studio there's all sorts of dis-assembled guitars and parts laying around.  He was smart enough not to mess with amps internally too much but he did know what he liked and wanted.

Pictures of him playing with and recording with his father's iconic guitar's isn't going to distance him from that shadow.
He's young with an abundance of talent, but someone close to him needs to tell him to stop acknowledging trolls on social media. Hard to do when you're young, but if it makes him react, it will also affect his music.

My point exactly. Coltrane. Taste matching skill.

It was a neverending quest to sound more and more like Journey.  Sadly, Eddie would pass before he could match his good friend Neil Schonn's work on Fronteirs.

The still living Eddie is right. Van Halen (1) was an amazing album. It sounded great then and it sounds great now. EVH certainly improved over the decades, but in no way did that album sound like shiat.

Just told my Amazon Echo to play Van Halen by Van Halen. Started playing Sammy Hagar VH. Had to explain it to Alexa in a bit different way.

Godda**it baby, you know I ain't lyin' to ya, Van Halen's debut was awesome, is awesome, and a game changer. Wouldn't change a thing. It's standard for artists to diss their own work, and EVH I could especially see, being the person he was, never being satisfied.
