Christina, your assignment is to write an article about a ham sandwich. Make it sound, you know, new.

Call it what it is.  It's a ham sandwich.

I used to get pissed off about BLTs, since it felt like eating a sandwich full of toppings and no real meat.

Later, I discovered good, thick bacon and changed my tune a little.

You want a sandwich that's heavy on the lettuce?  Do lettuce-wrapped spring rolls.

To me its all about a nice thick slice of a really good heirloom tomato that makes the sandwich, and its the hard to get part. Bread, bacon, mayo, etc. Are all easy to find. Finding that special super tasty tomato is the hardest part. Thats why blt season for me is in late july through september...

A ham and cheese sandwich isn't a "take" on a BLT. Those are two different sandwiches. Christ, this isn't hard.

A BLT, by definition, has bacon, lettuce, tomato. Substituting something for one of those things makes it not a BLT anymore.

It's a BLT, but I substituted ham for the bacon, soup for the bread, noodles for the lettuce and tomato, tossed in some carrots and celery, and then re-substituted chicken for the ham. This chicken noodle BLT is the best!

Sorry for my attitude of late, I probably need more bran in my diet

Hear me out, guys. What if we took a tired-ass BLT and removed the L and T and replaced the bacon with roast beef? Take the top piece of bread off and pour some gravy on it. Now that's a fresh take on the BLT.

The bacon is way less important than the tomatoes, if you ask me. BLTs are best when the tomatoes are fresh off the vine. I had a BLT from some diner once that was a fark ton of bacon with a bit of lettuce and tomato, and it was way too much bacon.

oh, heck to the yes!!!

as I constantly taunt NINEv2, while la puerca may well be my eventual downfall from vegulonism, for right-meow I am so glad that Vietnamese cuisine involves a metric-farktonne of seafood.

whole skrimps or even that Chao Tom paste... in those rice+lettuce wraps, nom! the toppings, condiments, nuoc nam/cham/mam, are all almost the real stars of the show!

oddly enough, at our anniversary dinner last week - "franch onyon pho" - from a farking vegan restaurant, no less. I have seriously zfc how they did it, but it tasted exactly like very well made actual beef pho. we ordered a total of 6 different dishes that night, and honestly I almost wonder if'n I should have simply gotten 2 more of that soup lololol.

one of the things I miss about my father-in-law being active (read: before being disallowed as an elderly horrible driver) - he'd take trips across the river into NJ and buy us roadside-stand Jersey tomatoes. the cheapest, ugliest, ripest things you have ever seen. all of which equates to? the farking most delicioso. only ones I've ever had that tasty were this one farm who'd set up at the weekly Union Sq. market in NYC, they quite literally had a separate table with a sign "ugly tomatoes - $3/bag!"

meanwhile, in Japan...

as an apology for that (lol) - here, ripe tomatoes, 7-spice, ciabatta, Cashel Blue -

also, because this is foodtab, I think we can get even nit-pickier (Narrator: you mean, more granular. me: shaddapa you face, narrator!)

a BLT needs crispetty rashers, not back/Irish/Canuck-peameal bacon. 'cos at that point, you're still eating a ham sanguich and all.

Yeah, since our big travel plans for our anniversary this year got cancelled because of Covid, I was thinking of just doing a weekend in Philly doing a dinner Friday and Saturday night.  Vedge is on the short list of options.  I figured since we've mostly gone meatless for weekday meals, that would be a good one.

I will always, always highly recommend Park Place just over the bridge in ~Merchantville NJ.

Looks awesome.  I'll definitely add it to my must visit list.  But for our anniversary I'll likely limit it to places easily accessible downtown without a car since we'll be staying overnight.

ah, now that makes good sense. yeah, we don't like to drive down there - in the before-times would often take the train (esp. in anticipation of massive boozing, lol) - but now that we're both double-juiced I'll have to look at whatever hotels/airbnb/etc. seem affordable.
