Yeah, I have a relative who got engaged just before the pandemic who is probably itching to have the party as soon as it's safe.  I somehow doubt she's the only one, and the only thing spreading out the demand at all is the number of people who will sign up as soon as they can get away with it rather than once everyone's vaccinated.

Yeah the guys who own wedding venues and party rental stores are going to go nuts over the next 18 months.  Not sure if it will make up for the lost business over the past 15...

My coworker just got engaged. It was kind of heartbreaking to hear how she was immediately breaking her friends up into their 'bubbles' and how safe they would be to attend.

Oh, and it is a self-sentenced prison stay, so try to be nice to your new warden.

Not just weddings. I've been chomping at the bit to finally see a dentist and optometrist, but so is everyone and their mother.

I'm not your dentist, but have you considered not doing that to save your teeth?

Did I miss something? I did both during the pandemic.

Initially my Dentist's office used a suction thing in a J-hook for. that hung in your mouth to keep you from breathing on them.

They gave that up between my first cleaning and the second.

By my third cleaning in 2020 they had been vaccinated so went back to a single mask.

Wait... Does everyone else do three cleanings a year or just me? I guess my bacteria are super-awesome.

Wedding boom is on in the US as vendors scramble to keep up

3x/yr for me, too. I get a clean bill of health + the comment, "you build up plaque faster than anyone I've ever seen - every single time.

Funny story about booking the reception for our wedding:

We were hunting for a reception hall about a year out.  First place we went to we told them "June of 2010".  The director of the reception hall said "Usually we're booked solid over a year in advance (this was June of 2009)..." and then he turned around his scheduling calendar so we could see it.  "I have no parties scheduled for that month, what day would you like..."

Financial crisis was hard on reception halls.  We ended up not booking with them (we realized we were in an advantageous negotiating position and could go for a much nicer place for no more money than we were expecting to spend).  But that kind of interaction repeated with pretty much every place we talked to.  We finally settled on a place which was quite impressive - NJ state ballroom at the PNC bank arts center.  We co-headlined that night with Tim McGraw (he was playing a concert there the night of our reception).  And we paid half of what it usually would have cost.  Loved it.

Did two cleanings in 2020... They essentially were working in Hazmat suits.  One patient at a time, and the other staff that normally would have been dealing with a second and third patient were on decon duty.  I refrained from asking if I was going to be put through a shower silkwood style... but it did cross my mind (and knowing the macabre humor of my dentist, he'd have played into the snarky question).

The first cleaning of this year was far more relaxed - clearly they were all vaccinated by that point.

I did Costco for the optometrist. The dental is a whole different deal. I'm still in a long line.

Mrs. F and I got engaged February 2020. We just had a tiny outdoor ceremony last month and live-streamed it to...actually way more people than possibly could have ever gone in person. All 10 or so people present were vaccinated. We'll have a full-sized reception in a year.

Didn't have that much competition for vendors and even got our wedding video back in like two weeks, probably because they didn't have too many others to edit.

Another upside to not having made any effort to keep up with friends during the pandemic - I most likely won't be invited to many weddings going forward.

We became Mr. and Mrs. Creidiki by signing the papers at the magistrate 20 years ago and had a nice meal with the witnesses afterwards.

There have been days without money, love or sex, but luckily never a day without respect. If we can keep that up we have a chance. I see no point in pretentious ceremony that we'd have spent the rest of our lives paying for.

Humans love celebrations, we're social primates.  Like a birthday or a baby shower or whatever, it's a 'life milestone party'.  And there's no law saying it has to be pretentious, or put you into a mortgage-level debt.  It's just a theme party.

My sister-in-law and my best friend are getting married next month, although SIL's jurisdiction just announced a new lockdown which will make things oh so very interesting...

My first dental cleaning of 2020 was scheduled for end of March.  Needless to say, that didn't happen.  Now that I'm vaccinated, I called to schedule a new one... the first available slot was December 29.  But I'm on their list of people to call if there's a cancellation!
