Of course it's a Welsh school. The dog is teaching them to read phonetically.

Got to be a ridiculously patient dog to sit through kids trying to sound out Aberystwyth.

FTFA:

"Charity Burns by Your Side, which runs the scheme, said reading with a companion dog could motivate a child to read independently, build self-confidence and improve reading fluency."

Literacy is a "scheme"?

To the Brits, "scheme" is a value-neutral word.  Like "program".
To Americans, "scheme" nearly always has negative connotations.

One of those cross-Atlantic things that always bothers me when I read it, then I have to put on my mental bowler hat and monocle and re-read the sentence.

Actually, I like the programs at the dog shelters even better. The kids are reading to lonely shelter dogs, so it's a win for both sides. The kids get to practice reading, and the dogs get some one on one contact.

But regardless of where these occur, it's a great idea.

Getting a little choked up seeing this. Reminds me of my nephew reading stories to his dog in the last days before crossing the rainbow bridge.

Awwww. I've always read to my dogs. I don't pretend that they understood Great Gatsby but my Akita seemed to enjoy Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
