It's Jersey. We have Republicans and rednecks, but the latter (South and Northwest Jerz) are VASTLY outnumbered by the former (hidden in plain sight in the Palisades, parts of North Jerz, the Hoboken high-rises, and suburbia out on 80).

When Chris Christie is basically the rightmost edge of your politics, you're not very conservative.

Last week I saw a Trump 2024 roadside merch stand on my way to Costco.

In his victory speech, delivered shortly after 10 p.m., Ciattarelli didn't mention Trump - instead name checking Abraham Lincoln. "The fact is, I'm an Abraham Lincoln Republican - one who believes in tolerance, mutual respect and the power and beauty of diversity,"

Mr. Ciattarelli obviously has been in a coma for a decade.

This is a very blue state, to be sure.  But there is no shortage of tried and true Drumpfers.  Mostly the small business owners and farmers.

I find it somewhat amazing how that happens.  You would think they grew up in a completely different world than the rest of us.

Now that I've read TFA, I have something else to say.

That is really good news, actually.  Because it means that there are plenty of Republicans in this state that are finally ready to wash their hands of that farking orange maniac.

The voters have spoken, and they have said they have no interest in more Trumpism.

I still stand by my original statement that there are a LOT of them out there.  I guess just not enough to get a Trumper to win the primary.  And that gives me at least a little faith in humanity.

It's not just that the never Trumper won, he also beat both Trump candidates combined

2021-06-09 9:38:19 AM
Well, I guess I will have to deal with Jack Ciatt if he gets elected. I see all the ads already. He's gonna end the 'lockdowns,' Then, he's gonna lower property taxes. Then he's gonna cut education. Then he's gonna cut taxes on businesses, 'cause he's a business man. His next step will be 'Securing elections.' Then, he's gonna cut education and other government goods and services some more. Then the Republicans in the legislature are going to scream about states balanced budget.....you know what? Trumper or no, ALL Republicans pander to a base of short-sighted, lazy bigots and misogynists, fearful cowards that allow racism and faith to influence their every thought. They are all lurching from one manufactured crisis to another, all while ignoring the real issues that plague our unregulated capitalism and diminish the opportunities of  the majority of hard-working Americans.

There is no daylight between Jack Shiat and the rest of the GOP. They will do whatever they must to continue the fleecing of America.

My ex lives in Egg Harbor Twp, not far from Atlantic City. The amount of Trump signs I saw down there was almost staggering.  White people have short memories down there.  And hate the same things he hates. He put so many small business out of business in that area.

State-wide Dem primary: McAuliffe, Ayala, Herring is going to be the Dem ticket at the top.

Can't speak for a lot of the local races, but can say that in rural SW VA / New River Valley, the Trumpiest of MAGAt chuds won their primaries. One guy, Wren Williams, ran some stunningly bad commercials down here that were entirely negative and completely devoid of any ideas or solutions (unless you consider a final solution to the Northern Virginia problem to be a solution). That cockhole won by a 2 to 1 margin.

If I had to guess for the November election, the General Assembly will look like a legislative McDLT: keep the derp side derp and the blue side blue.

He once called Trump a "charlatan"?

Lemme guess... in 2016?

*googles*

Ayup. Also publicly refused to vote for him and said he was "unfit" for the job.

Of course now he is a MAGA nutjob glad-handing the Trumpers and hoping everyone forgets about 2016.

No Dem gov has been reelected in NJ since 1977?

Well, then it's about damn time it happened again then, isn't it?

The fact that there is even a 0.01% of a Trumper winning is horrifying, so every time one of those idiots loses is a call for celebration.

"Jack Ciattarelli, a three-term former member of the New Jersey General Assembly who was backed by the state's GOP establishment, defeated three other Republicans - two of whom centered their campaigns around loyalty to the former president"

He won with just under half the vote totals, meaning that just over half the requblicans wanted some other Trumplican instead.

I'm not ready to discount this light appearing at the end of the tunnel being a train just yet.

I've also noticed all the steps being taken here to try to prevent that from ever happening again.

I'm more focused on how Trumpers perform in GOP primaries than in Generals because that's a better indicator of just exactly how much sway he still holds in the party.

A Trumper loses in a general election, the GOP just doubles down. "Maybe we lost because we weren't Trumpy enough?"

Trumpers start losing primaries and the GOP goes "Huh.. maybe we shouldn't be hitching our wagon to this idiot after all"

Except that now Trump is only the bigliest loser, and every day he's not in office he's a bigly loser to even more people. I mean, he couldn't even keep a reposted blog running because the dimwit followers expect instant gratification.

I need to sell some merch of my own, stuff to put up next to Trump merch so people can have fun. Gotta be cheap so you can put up a lot of it, and hopefully record them angrily taking it down.

Sure, and I'll celebrate every time Trumpism loses.

// Jersey's problem is more that we keep electing corporatist goons like Murphy, Christie, and Corzine

I mean it makes sense that most of the candidates in the Republican primary were Trumpers, because only a complete imbecile with an overblown sense of importance would think they have any chance of beating Phil in the fall. And I mean, Phil Murphy isn't even that great as a governor, but he's going to win by 15 points, probably 20.

Yeah, but I was expecting Fox News to be putting a (D) next to his name by now.  This insane denial is going on way longer than I thought it would.

Don't worry, Jack will be kissing the ring in Bedminster by September once the polls have him down 10 points to Murphy. The only way an R is going to win the governorship in NJ right now is have all establishment-type Rs and Trumpers vote for him, while at the same time having a hated opponent in the state(think Florio and Corzine) The Murphy haters are louder(like the dipshiat gym owner who was on Fox every day last year, while they neglected to mention he was a drunk driving murderer) but fewer in number here.

Murphy is just kind of there. Doesn't have the personality of Cuomo, but managed the pandemic well enough that only the Trumpers loath him. Any "radical/socialist/anarchist" ads they run against him are going to fall flat for a former SVP at Goldman.

why do so many former Goldman execs run for Gov. of NJ?

They'll work just as well against him as they do against anyone.  It's just that there aren't enough people who fall for that shiat to win in statewide.

Yep. That said Jones is actually the original and Trump the copy. He threatened to defund the Dekalb Police not because of civil rights abuse but because they kept investigating him for rape.

quatchi: No Dem gov has been reelected in NJ since 1977?

Well, then it's about damn time it happened again then, isn't it?

Here are the Dem govs since then:

- Florio. In addition to being an openly arrogant ass that everyone hated to begin with, he hiked taxes everywhere (including putting sales tax on paper products and other previously exempt items) while simultaneously using that additional revenue for handouts (instead of, you know, actually applying it to the state's issues)
- McGreevy. It takes A LOT in NJ to get a reputation for being well-over-the-top corrupt (heck, we have laws here that explicitly exempt a lot of behavior that would be corruption elsewhere), but he managed to do it. There's a reason he bugged out early, and it was because the feds were breathing down his neck, not because he was a "gay American". (BTW, note that there was no Republican elected between him and Corzine, so it's not like the office changed parties, it was just that McGreevy resigned before he could start his re-election campaign.)
- Corzine. He was pushed into office by the Democratic party bosses here, over the well-liked guy who had taken over for the rest of McGreevy's term, because Corzine essentially paid them off to do so. He had the personality of a wet noodle, never seemed comfortable doing anything a governor should do (including press conferences), and did more in terms of staged photo-ops than anything else. He was like the rich kid who was paying people to be his friends, because otherwise no one really wanted him around. Christie won against him not because Corzine did a horrible job, but because Christie had an actual personality (regardless of what that was), whereas Corzine was kinda just "there".

I actually thought Murphy was going to be Corzine 2.0, but while he's been a little wishy-washy in some cases, he also handled the pandemic pretty well (outside of the first month), and you have to admire someone who still stood out in front of this despite being in recovery from recent cancer surgery at the time. As someone else said, he's doesn't have Cuomo's forcefulness, but nor did he disappear. Plus, he gets lots of bonus points for bringing back "knucklehead" into common use.
