So, an entire country full of folks who can practically predict the street address of the house where you grew up based soley upon your accent and Subby never considered that they might be a tad xenophobic? A bit 'wary of outsiders'?

Where do you think America got her racism from?

They're obsessed with xenophobic hatred down to the city level, so this isn't really a stretch.

Colonialism. In general. The Spanish, the French, and the Brits all contributed to the melange of racism that is America's special brew. But the Brits are at least up front about their racism. It's almost refreshing to see compared to some varieties in Europe and the States.

my favorite is when Americans get pissy about athletes in other countries kneeling. so it wasn't actually about standing in respect for the US flag? I'm shocked shocked not that shocked.

They cancel football games because of it.
Then they punish the team by making them play games without fans in the stands.  Coronavirus gave them a break from confronting themselves.

Not nearly as often as they should. Most of the time it's wrist-slapping fines.

The other is an empty platitude meant to deflect and avoid dealing with an issue.

The kneeling has no connect to God Save the Queen because they only sing it for cup finals, international matches and on Armistice Day. Plus they kneel right before kickoff, not during pre-game ceremonies.

Reading comprehension is hard for Fark.  Here, I'll bold it again.I was arguing that if people want to kneel during the anthem, fine.  It's as meaningless as the anthem.  Both gestures make people feel better.

Every sporting event seems like it's become a U2 concert.  There's always some symbolic gesture or some meaningful person trotted onto the field and everyone is supposed to follow along and stand or kneel or sing.  It's a game.  It's entertainment.  It's supposed to be an escape where you can go have some beers with friends and have some fun.  I really don't care what an athlete thinks or what special month it is so you're wearing special uniforms.  I just want to see you throw a ball through a peach basket and hit some dingers.  If I wanted to be depressed about the current situation, I be at home on Fark.

And you still get that. The two minutes (tops) of statement on field before that destroys and replaces *none* of what you signed up for.

Why does A FEW SECONDS/MINUTES of statement destroy the following THREE HOUR SPORTING PRESENTATION?

It's not two minutes.  They run that shiat for the entire game.  Like I said, you haven't been to a game or watched a game in a long time.  When you paint messages on the court and have them on electronic signs around the field, that's not two minutes.  When you make PA announcements and trot "special" people onto the field every chance you get, that's not two minutes.  When you constantly are thanking the troops or nurses or firemen throughout the game, that's not two minutes.  When your team wears camo uniforms, that's not two minutes.  Starting to get it?  When you do it all the time for everything, it means nothing and people get sick of it, and here we are.

How do you feel about commercials every 4th or 5th play? these have always been *far* more frequent intrusive in televised sports. Plus out of everything you quoted exactly how many of these people have received threats of boycotts, arrest and / or physical violence from large tracts of the population? Mainly the knee-bending and Pride-related promotions. Not cancer awareness, not nurses, and NEVER the troops. You're essentially labelling all of that as ruinous to TV sport and that just isn't true.

If it bugs you that much stick to grass-roots / local versions. They're more accessible, far cheaper and you might find a spot to be able to positively contribute to keep your chosen sport alive.

As a general reply to the "har har empty gesture" talk:

The point of the protest is to put a spotlight on the issue. Colin Kaepernick famously asked a service member for advice on how he could respectfully protest, followed that and his message got twisted into bullshiat about "respecting the flag". But for a portion of the audience, it inspired them to try and enact change in their community.

For England (and Europe in general), the protest is also about the vile treatment minority athletes are often subjected to by "fans". Mark McKenzie of the USMNT got a torrent of abuse for the crime of playing badly against Mexico on Sunday night. Marcus Rashford has been unimpeachable in how he has acted during the pandemic, taking the UK gov't to task for the shoddy job they've done on securing meals for children so that nobody goes hungry and starting initiatives to tackle the problem, yet he gets lambasted because he had the temerity to speak up. Mario Balotelli was racially abused in Verona, spoke up about it and Verona's team president accused him of trying to slander the city and his team's fans.

Athletes aren't lawmakers. They can't write laws and pass them. Their main thrust for change on a large scope is the platform afforded to them by their profession. But apparently plenty of people don't want to hear them talk about anything except "ha ha, point scored for my team. Heh heh, other team didn't score more than us" because it might make them think about reality.

Balotelli got sacked for that IIRC.
