"It was 1994" isn't a great excuse. Even as a kid then, I wondered why such a big, hit show had only white people in it.

Non-whites didn't matter; white was the default, even if it looked bad.

How would subby improve diversity in the Friends reunion?

Seriously, I'd like to know.

Look on the bright side. There's no way they're making a show like that today. For that we can be thankful.

/but yeah, even in the 80's there were a LOT of shows with a hell of a lot more diversity than Friends a decade later.

I won't say there were never some funny moments, but what a waste of a show. go back and watch the great sitcoms from the 60-mid 80's and they are still great

In New York of all places. I can understand 6 white people becoming friends and forming bonds with little diversity, but barely having black/Latino people even in the background shots of NYC would be like seeing a show set in Miami without palm trees.

Jerry is Jewish, as obviously are his parents, uncle etc but none of George, Elaine or Kramer are. George and Elaine seem to be of catholic origin according to the internet so that technically makes the show mostly catholic I guess.

Excuse me, but both Fisher Stevens AND Hank Azaria were on the show.  Don't actors who portrayed Indian stereotypes count for anything?!?

I always assumed George was Jewish.  He's just Queens Jewish vs. Long Island Jewish.
His parents were stereotypical Jewish.

Elaine was Roman Catholic.

Well some internet sleuthing tells me he IS from Long Island, not Queens originally and his father was a member of the Knights of Columbus!

So his father is at least Catholic but I guess his mother could be Jewish?

George's parents celebrated Festivus (a festival for the Rest of Us) so I don't think the characters were Jewish. Or are you saying that because the actors are Jewish, the characters must be Jewish?

Cuz if so I have a really funny joke about Jews...

I mean, it didn't seem too racist at the time, but that article is full of defensive cringey quotes.

"What can I say? I wish Lisa was black?"

"We have Malala, Mindy Kaling, BTS [the South Korean boy band]. There are three women from Ghana, one who talks about how Friends saved her life. Two boys from Kenya. Three kids in India,"

Yikes, folks.

I didn't watch TV, or listen to music in the 1990s, as I was doing that parenting/home renovation/climbing the career ladder/barely sleeping thing.

So, early 90s, cable really took off.  Living Single on Fox, Friends on NBC doing the "ripoff the concept and profiting." thing.

Seems more like a top down decision, to create a show and target a single demographic exclusively.  The black people had one show, the white people got their show.  Don't seem to be a lot of interest in breaking the color barriers and de-segregating either show.

Again, never watched either show, I'm just looking at the cast credits on the internet.  Seems like it was the 90s, and no one in charge at NBC or Fox believed that white people or black people had much interest in each other's lives, and it was all marketing driven.

I suspect any modern day network effort towards inclusion and tolerance is also marketing driven.  The big difference is that the mucky mucks finally realize there's money to be made from non white people these days.

So, progress?

This accurate answer was probably, we thought we could make more money with a mostly white cast in 1994.  It's not a particularly ethical answer, but then I don't really expect TV networks to be ethical.

Yeah, see, in the 90s we'd have responded to Hamilton with a stage play about MLKjr starring Louis CK.

That means nothing.  Festivus isn't a religion and there was nothing in the Festivus "dogma" that said you had to dump your religion to celebrate Festivus.

That said, I don't recall George's parents saying anything about religion (could be wrong).  But Jewish is the best bet as they sort of ran in the same circles as Seinfeld's parents.

How would you know?  Do you listen to a lot of racists?

It's a lazy argument these days to just label anything racist.  Misrepresented?  Sure.  But you are desensitizing the word.

I suppose they should have just brought in an alternate cast.

Kind of a bad example as the lead character is a racist d-bag IRL, but the best I could come up with. If they did a "Home Improvement" reunion, the show would focus on Tim, his wife, a LOT on the boys, Al, and maybe a few Tool Time girls (Wilson died about 15 years ago).
I cannot recall a single POC appearing on that show, and it was a hit show for 5 or so years. So, what would they do for the reunion to have more P'sOC represented

Pretty much, however dumping on the whatever is or was popular is par for the course around here and in the media.  The farther back you go in TV history (and all other media), the less diverse it was.  Does that mean all of it is all rubbish?

This is pretty much the only valid criticism.  To complain that the main characters are all white is infantile woke bullshiat.  The main characters of Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air are all black, where's the outrage for that?

But yeah, the background characters and guest stars, based in New York City?  Even Seinfeld regularly had non white people on the show.

I do not have the bandwidth to care that Friends was too white in the 90s. The problem wasn't one show about a group of 6 white friends. The problem was, and is, overall lack of diversity in the industry. One show isn't responsible for the entire industry's flaws.

Friends sucked 30 years ago and it still sucks today.

What the networks should do, is go the exact opposite of inclusiveness, and simultaneously release like 15 different spinoff series. Black friends, Latin friends, Asian friends, gay friends, disabled friends.

People will watch if only to complain and try to internet police it.
