Google's Duo works for me, and I'm a Windows person.

If it requires a certain CODEC package that shall not be named then I will never install it. I won't break every other multimedia application under the sun just for video chat.

/wish I had never owned an iPod

shiat in one hand, hope in the other. Is there a chance technology will lead the way to closing the political gap as well?

Call me when they make an app that works on actual operating systems, and not just loading it up in a browser.

...well...yeah...but why would you?

In personal life Facebook Messenger is the go-to for video calling.

At work, Zoom or Teams.

FaceTime was the thing like a decade ago.

Apple is trying to stay relevant - limiting facetime to Apple just means that more and more Apple users are using WhatsApp and Google instead, because is what their Android-using friends and family have.

Opening up FaceTime allows them to stay in control a bit longer.

/they actually announced that FaceTime would be opened up 'soon'  from the moment FaceTime was first announced - it just took years for them to actually follow through

Is it wrong I read that as "facesitting"?

Oh Jesus.  Hoping my parents don't see this. It's bad enough with the occasional call and making the occasional 10+ hour round trip now that we're vaxxed.  Now they'll be expecting the nightly FaceTime chat.

This is one of those things that makes me thing, what's the point?

"Hey Zoom and all those others are doing really well.  We need to make our own version."

If it's not a striking and gigantic improvement over what's already there, I can't see any reason to use it.  Especially if it means it will only work once everyone ELSE decides to use it.

If they can develop a way for young ladies to provide that service over the internet, they'd make a bundle.

I'd use it, but I'm afraid that it would keep reminding me to practice Spanish.

Actually there was a lawsuit from a patent troll that caused Apple to change how Facetime functioned originally and this is why it was never open sourced because of liability.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/apple-loses-appeal-in-facetime-lawsuit-must-pay-virnetx-440-million/

Facetime was initially peer to peer but had to change the way it worked because of the lawsuit so it changed where Apple servers had to relay it. So that is why it has taken so long.  Apple would have had to charge Android and Windows users, and still would if the app was native to cover the cost of bandwidth.

Literally don't know a single person who uses messenger for video calling.

FTFA : "Once you've downloaded the new operating system..."

Cute how they think people will switch their OS to make a video call.

If they can magically do it today, they could have done it years ago as well.
