Many of the immigrants we are seeing are from Guatemala, which is slowly going underwater due to climate change.

China is the largest contributer now, but the US had a more than 100 year head start on industrialization, so most of those fossil carbon atoms floating around in the air still say "Made in USA."

I'm with AOC on this.  I grew up with our government undermining democratically elected governments in Central and South America, and even sponsoring coups that installed military dictatorships because of scary commies.  Post WW2 Europe and Japan are the only success stories in nation-building by the U.S.  Every attempt (real, half-assed, or don't give shiat) since then has been a complete clusterfark.  I think the Biden-Harris administration wants to help Central American countries but they need to publicly acknowledge the legitimacy of those seeking asylum.

If the hammer and sickle are that bad because of what the USSR did, then I have some bad news about the stars and stripes. Because those represent (among other things) the racial attitudes, the propaganda tactics, the systems of profiling, mass incarceration and genocide, and a whole lot of the money that inspired/fueled the Third Reich.

And even considering the time, the Cold War was basically the US and USSR competing to out-atrocity one another. The US was just smart enough to let its people (primarily the white ones, but still) have enough money to prop up the facade of decency...while overthrowing governments, creating terrorist groups, assassinating political figures, doing horrific experiments, helping Nazis avoid consequences, etc.

I'm not 'whatabouting' here. The USSR was shiatty, but the US was, and is, just as shiatty. We just won the PR fight.

I mean, look at what the Stars and Stripes did, and are still doing, to the First Nations tribes.

And, should we forget that the Stars and Stripes were founded on slavery regardless of our also having the civil war to stop it?

And, should we talk about the fight for worker safety and unions? Or corporations that pay full time workers so little that they qualify for food stamps?

Where should we begin?

Well yes, and it was used as such for decades before the USSR was even a thing, but the only reason to compare it to the swastika is if you only know of its use as a Soviet symbol.

The Clash-Washington Bullets
Youtube MT-LyKFvlFc

The Clash called it in 1980.

Oh! Mama, Mama look there!
Children are playing in the street again
Don't you know what happened down there?
A youth of 14 got shot down there
The Kokane guns of Jamdown Town
The killing clowns, the blood money men
Are shooting those Washington bullets again

As every cell in Chile will tell, the cries of the tortured men
Remember Allende, and the days before,
Before the army came
Please remember Victor Jara,in the Santiago Stadium,
Es verdad - those Washington Bullets again

And in the Bay of Pigs in 1961,
Havana fought a playboy in the Cuban sun,
For Castro is a colour, whos'a redder than red,
Those Washington bullets want Castro dead
For Castro is the colour...
...That will earn you a spray of lead

For the very first time ever,
When they had a revolution in Nicaragua,
There was no interference from America
Human rights in America!!!!
The people fought the leader, and up he flew...
With no Washington bullets what else could he do?

An' if you can find a Afghan rebel that the Moscow bullets missed
Ask him what he thinks of voting Communist...

Ask vuh Dalai Lama in the hills of Tibet, "How many monks did the Chinese get?"
In a war-torn swamp stop any mercenary,
An' check the British bullets in his armoury
Que?
Sandinista!

/a well-funded associate of those "Afghan rebels" - a Saudi -  would 21 years later launch an attack on America. Maybe you've heard of him.

🇨🇺 1953 - We're literally responsible for Fidel Castro. We constantly spend time demonizing him, but the dude he replaced was WAY worse (F. Batista).

🇨🇴  1954 - The US-supported assassination of the popular leftist president Jorge Gaitán is a pretty clear starting point for the civil war and illicit cocaine trade which would last in some way, shape, or form for the next 40+ years.

🇺🇾 1973 - Uruguayan coup d'état

We've spend the better part of the 20th century dicking around with other people's politics in our own hemisphere in a desperate attempt to achieve some kind of regional hegemony and root out communist/socialist ideologies, and have caused a massive humanitarian crisis. The sad part is that these people fleeing these areas and coming here isn't going to solve the problems we've caused.

Snipped to save space- these people are desperate- sending the kids Norte gives them a chance. And the chance that , if the make it here- gives them good odds of doing so. Making it. Getting an education - maybe becoming a doctor , a nurse , a lawyer , a skilled mechanical engineer , a mechanic who can work on all kinds of things without worry of a mob or cartel people or the policia showing up. A chance to send some money home.

In a way- that helps - brainpower and will power comes here, and money flows south to help family come North , or they find a way ( an DONT underestimate folks ) to make things happen back home.
I hope .
