weakened environmental protections, permitted discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and made it harder for shareholders to hold corporations accountable.

Yeah all of that seems on brand for Democrats...

Even the discrimination thing. While they certainly aren't OPENLY discriminatory like conservatives, the older party brass is still... not that woke.

Biden is doing good. the Dems in the Captiol are the same they ever was.

There was no way they couldn't have had a plan and started repealing them on DAY ONE.

Both sides are bad, and by bad, we see they are Trump-Bad. regardles of their feelings, or their justifications, for practical purposes, the Dems jsut made Trump's temporary malice permanent.

This is why outside the USA, nobody trust the Dems to be a magical kind of American, who is somehow unlike the past few decades. They really are on board with Trumpism. They are, as always, America First: and America means the same people talking like the Dems, but living in a Republican Party society.

One of the biggest constraints, congressional staff members said, was an agenda that was packed from the moment Democrats took power, as they impeached Trump after the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, passed pandemic relief and confirmed Biden's political appointees

Wasn't all of this stuff in the list finished by mid-February? This "we were too busy" sounds like bullshiat excuse making.

So some of the rules are likely to be voided by court rulings.  Some of the rules are likely to peeve some swing votes if revoked.  And some rules were ignored because you can always trust that Democrats will waffle around because of "reasons" and the Greater Democratic Cat Herding Theory.

Sure would be nice to have an itemized list of what rules fells into what category.

A reminder that this was organized and endorsed by the Black Caucus. Everyone likes to pretend that Pelosi just white-womanned her way into getting those Kente cloths into her possession, but this was an organized effort. You don't have to like it, but it's not the story people think it is.

It's called power creep.

The Roman Republic didn't fall in a day, it took 80 years of ambitious men, each one chipping away at the institutions and granting more power to themselves until there was nothing left but the Princeps.

Marius got the ball rolling. Sulla went one further. Pompey went one further. Crassus went one further. Caesar went one further. Octavian finally completed the process (there were some others too but I'm being brief here).

Frog in a pot of boiling water. In 30 years America will be a democracy in name only, with an autocrat who decides everything and three branches who decide nothing. And you won't even notice it happening until it's too late.

LOL. Goddamn, I am so tired of being right.

Dems are whiffing everything so hard that I want the 2 calories I spent filling in bubbles by their names on my ballot back.

Y'all are really going to run out the clock on even the slightest, tiniest bit of progress and better things and cede the entire country over to fascism, aren't you?

I hope the Republican Party reimburses you for when you expensed those baseball bats you used to kneecap any progressive that tried to run and actually do what you SAID you want to do but only ever used as an excuse to get re-elected and buy your 5th beach house.

It already happened. The Achilles heel was revealed just last year: Congress can do nothing when it comes to enforcing subpoenas, and any lawsuit or criminal prosecution by the federal government is ultimately up to the President.

Until that's fixed, it's like leaving an unpatched machine accessible to the internet.

But with that simple majority requirement, what were they supposed to do?  They have two traitors in the Senate who both refuse to vote with the party and refuse to overturn the filibuster.  I think Congressional Democrats should be louder about calling them out, but what remedy do they have to move forward?

Yeah, we're pretty much done with the next republican president.  It'll be even more pronounced if they hold the house or senate at the same time. I give it until 2030 at the latest.

While I have no doubt these are the facts, they don't change the fact that given how little actual action has been taken to address systemic institutional racism in our society nor to reign in the powers and impunity of the police, that moment still comes off as performative AF.

But "all appearance, no action" is pretty much the name of the game for establishment Democrats in congress, meanwhile the Republican sh*tbags (who are sh*tty sh*theads who are actively f*cking this country for their own power and profit) keep wrenching us towards Fascism and block anything that might actually serve and help anyone except the ultra-rich, and the few progressives who have managed to get elected basically get doors slammed in their faces despite, as you mentioned further up above, usually being right about what will actually end up happening when progressives are ignored.

austerity101: Funny how progressives keep being right about everything. And the country keeps ignoring them at their peril.

I agree that it wasn't terribly effective, hence my "You don't have to like it" comment. My point was that this keeps getting framed as "white representatives did a tone-deaf thing about race without so much as consulting with their Black colleagues" when, like you described, it's really "privileged Congressional representatives hold a performative moment instead of actually doing something useful."

To undo the rules, they would have needed at least 50 Democratic votes in the Senate; they only have 48.

This is all going to degenerate into a battle between fascism, fascist mob rule, mob rule, unaffiliated troublemakers and random cults that spring up for no reason.

I'm going to hide in my closet. We'll all rue the day this got out of control.
