Oh, that reminds me:  How about Image Maps, you don't really see those anymore either.

Yep. I have fond memories of navigating foreign web rings (mostly Japanese) for the hell of it and navigating to increasingly niche places. Exploration of web rings was probably the most fun I ever had on the web back then and I really wish my family had kept those drives.

Those things were a biatch and a half to make for hotspots in shapes other than rectangles.

Aah the olden days. Screens were 800x600, you had to account for computers that could only display 256 colors by using the web-safe 216 palette, <table> was used more for layouts than presenting data, Flash and Shockwave had just started becoming popular, and doing 1:1 pixel-based site designs worked because the screen resolutions were ridiculously small.

And, of course, the pinnacle of web design:  All those animated gifs that would show up everywhere.

They were mostly little image links to tell you something about the site, like what browser it was made for or what html version it used or what was under the hood (PHP, ASP, MySQL, etc.), or something about whoever made the site, like buttons you can click to send email or whatever.  Later on, I seem to recall a bit of JavaScript to display various instant messenger statuses through them, like AIM or ICQ, where it would be red if you were offline or green if you were online, or whatever.

I remember when I had to buy blocks of internet time.
Then there was EarthLink.
I could travel about the country without long distant internet charges.

Good times.
Not many idiots online then.

Now not so much.

Those were great, you could find a great site, instead we get the same ten places determined by Google to matter
