So we can't get internet access as a public utility, but we can sue to get the product that uses it as one?  Isn't that sort of like getting Ford listed as a public utility, but making sure all the roads are privatized?

Good luck, Ohio. Btw,
"Google's market capitalization currently stands around 1.5 trillion dollars as of February 2021."

Also:
"Ohio concluded the 2020 fiscal year with General Revenue Fund tax revenues of $1.1 billion."

So you only need about $1.5 trillion more to buy Google, and then you can do whatever you want with Google.

// I googled those numbers.

This sounds a little akin to airline regulation, but the way it works is that it has to apply to all of them or it's pointless.

The only thing I don't like about Google is how they shove so much equipment into the hands of schools, we're all stuck using their ecosystem and Chromebooks. F5 refresh WHERE IS THE F5 KEY???

It's like an alternate universe where all the keys are a little different. I should just be glad they're still QWERTY.

Apparently you double-click the caps key (or shift key?) to enable caps lock. Not a terrible solution.

I just get sick of being spoken down to by a 10-year-old who thinks he knows everything about computers because he's had a Chromebook for a year.

"Dad, you don't need to save anything, it's all automatically saved while you work! Hahaha, why would you think that?"

Some sort of... net neutrality?

Google has something called Google Fiber.  It does put them in direct competition with AT&T, Comcast, Time Warner, etc.  There's a case to be made that internet access should be regulated like a public utility (given how anemic the competition actually is), but the case can't be made if you don't also regulate AT&T, Comcast and Time Warner like public utilities.  Sounds like they're just picking on Google.

Do any Republicans remember their opposition to net neutrality? I mean I know that pertained to ISPs, but Jesus.

While I can't find it, I'm pretty sure I called this here on Fark at one point. That the GOP would try to regulate these social media sites, search engines, and anything that doesn't express conservative views to their liking, by declaring them utilities. Only for that purpose.

Here we see it disguised as concern for potential customers who somehow don't have any choice but to use Google as their search engine. Which is asinine and a waste of tax payer money when the judge has to point this out to these people.

Because it sets bad habits.  Gotta keep them from sending all caps emails somehow.

I still cannot stand people who this in a professional setting.

And who needs a capslock?  There are 2 shift keys, should be able to cover everything you need.

Also, if you hit ALT + magnifying glass 🔍 it turns on caps lock.

OK Captain Tightpants: "I'm no expert, but don't the cell companies own and share the towers? Can't remember anything about governments building towers.

Back in the early days, some investors just built some towers down interstates and then charged cell companies to roam on them.

That doesn't happen much anymore, that I know of. The companies do usually own them now.

Google could never really get Google Fiber properly positioned because the big cable/telecoms would not let them run their fiber or attach to their networks in most places, networks built with tax dollars and running over public easements.

If Google were allowed to sell cheap/fast bandwidth over the public infrastructure it would be awesome.

Christ, I didn't read past the first few sentences, but I assume the rationale for this is "nobody checks anything that doesn't show up on the first page of results, not fair!"

Republicans not only demand their own reality, they demand that it be served up to them with no effort on their part, no delay, no information about what a bunch of bullshiat it is, just straight derp right into their veins.

I thought that's what Fox "News" was for.

They kind of are.  I have some clients that are schools and I have a buddy that is the Director of IT for a school district.

They offer a district chromebooks at a price they cannot refuse.  Even rich districts that are very well funded and could afford a full laptop experience cannot turn them down at the prices they offer them.

They do it for a reason.  They're trying to get the kids hooked into the Google ecosystem so it's the devices and operating system they're used to try and corner the market.

They're basically drug dealers trying to undercut the market by such a wife margin by handing them out for almost free when it comes down to it.

That way they then sell the school on using the entire ecosystem from the chromebooks to Google Workspaces.  Storage email, everything.

Then they're getting the kids hooked into ecosystem so they will purchase chromebook devices in future.

But they suck compared to Google though.

Even when I'm researching issues on technet for resolutions to issues that are not known, the results suck.  I can even throw "technet" into search term and I still get shady ass random sites instead of actual technet articles/forum to research.

So using a Microsoft search engine I cannot even get results for the Microsoft support ecosystem to show up.

And they're like the second best search engine?
