Let's not make any efforts to encourage building of decent, new low/moderate income housing in the city, so as to appease the property speculators....like Trump and the Kushners.   Let's not build out commuter infrastructure to Jersey so that blue collar and lower skilled office staff have easy access to affordable housing with a reasonable commute.  Again, to appease the property speculators.   What could go wrong?   It's not like those losers are going to quit and move somewhere else where costs are lower and the commute easier.

Can't do that. That would be socialism.

Went into the office today for the first time in like, 8 months.

1.  Had 2 people come up to talk my ear off about nothing until I pretended to go to the bathroom.
2. Worked shorter hours because of the commute time.
3. Internet at work is slower than home w/VPN.
4. Commute on the way home was crappy.
5. In person meeting with out of town stakeholders was VERY productive and worthwhile.

So, all in all I can say definitively that I am a happier, more productive employee working from home who can still knock it out of the park when I do have to go in. I now view going to the office the same as going on travel - worthwhile, but only in small doses.

Yeah, NYC real estate is never coming back.
/See tech companies looking to start offloading all that expensive real estate

With people coming back to the office my dept has to confirm to the dress code again, last year at this time shorts and t shirts in the office. But it is funny the rest of the depts don't seem to care about the dress code and I think it is great and from what I heard about 18% won't be coming back full-time, just WFH and In the office a few times a month.

well, what the hell else are we supposed to do now that we are all back to sitting in our offices for hours upon hours with nothing to do?

sounds like July 1st is the magic number for a lot of us.

At least they weren't showing off pics of their vacation (I hope,) I always hated office mates that did that.
On the other hand, higher likely hood of showing off pics of their new covid-boom babies, which I also hated.

/basically what I'm saying is leave me alone and let me work
//no one wants to see pictures of people they dont know and places they weren't.
///open cubefarms should be illegal. Walls, doors, proper HVAC for every non-home office worker.

I *wish* it was July 1st for me.  They had us head back to the office back in October. My money's on one part it's when the office lease renewed and one part the C levels got annoyed.

/They were "requested" to be there to "show presence".

Renewing the lease last October of everyone was being productive at home sounds like a dumb move, unless they really had the landlord over a barrel because of that fact.

counter-share.  Have a bunch of pictures of your closet and endlessly talk about how you aren't sure to organize it by color, purpose or brand or shelving, etc.  Next week, talk about your pantry.

That's just pure speculation on my part, as asking us to come back in was real abrupt with no reason given - just an email from HR on a Tuesday/Wednesday saying we should plan to be back in the office starting the following Monday.

Asking around the office no one really had a clue as to why, with the upper level managers being real hush hush.

So, other than the mild annoyance that this particular story will likely dominate Fark headlines until the end of the calendar year, It is going to be mildly interesting to see how the stand-off between Employers and Employees unfolds in regards to returning to the office.

More valuable employees will be able to leverage their worth into increased remote work options.  If your skill set is sufficiently valuable and rare, you can even use the time to switch companies should your current employer prove intractable on the matter.

Personally, I'm moving to a 50/50 Office/Remote Work arrangement, which suits me just fine.  Others will have their own preferences.

I had been WFH for several years before Covid but would go into our main office in Manhattan for business reasons when needed, a few times a year (I'm in the NYC suburbs so it's just a commute). Got the email today about post-Covid. Coming to the office remains optional. Conference rooms are open again but meeting organizers must provide a digital option. You need to register to come in. Masks are no longer required in the office, but you the building continues to require masks in the lobby and elevators.
