Isn't the whole thing cloud tops? Unless we crash one into the planet and anger the nest of carnivorous rocks that live there.

Loved that series.  Hogan's writing was always entertaining.

I heard that the brain eater got to him, and he had become a holocaust denier and a Velikovskyist.  And, damn it, the evidence is there in the Giants books.  As far back as the first one, Inherit the Stars.

His later stuff was L Ron Hubbard levels of "hah, see I'm stigginit to the scientific orthodoxy with my sly satire".
