What's worse, that was their first stop after picking it up from the dealership!

Oh,so  you were the rich kid on the Honda CT70 while the rest of us were running around with a whopping 3.5hp Tecumseh engine on ours.

Grew up in NYC in the 70s, that really brought back memories. This is why I love public photography.

Me 2.

I had that model bike. For a day and a half. Then, I realized I had no money for upkeep or insurance. Fortunately, the seller was a great guy.

There's nothing obvious in my appearance (I think) that says I'm the stupidest person you've ever met. I'm not really sure when it dawns on you, but inside an hour or two, I'm pretty sure.

I don't know if I'm more appalled at the condition of the beaches or the clothes those children were wearing.

Totally.  We had a moped I was allowed to ride when I was farking 10-11 years old. That thing topped out at 35-40 mph, more if you sent it down a hill.  Helmet was totally optional.  How am I alive again?

Also, that coney island water slide was the same one in The Banana Splits intro, dead certain.

What an absolute sh*thole.  I do want that ice cream sundae though.

Back when parents knew that a gaping head wound would be healed with an ice pack and Marino's Italian Ice!

Natural cure alls.

You had a 4 stroke?  Luxury!  I had to make do with a 50cc 2 stroke knock-off that wouldn't start without half a can of ether.

My rich friends had the Hondas.

When my kids have looked at pictures of me and my wife when we were kids (both of us were born in '71) they are appalled at our clothes. I floored them when I told them that I can remember roaming around of the back of the Surburban on road trips or going to the variety store to buy mom 2 packs of Vantage Menthol cigarettes @ 8 years old.

Never really been to Staten Island unless you count passing through to get out of state, but damn those then-new houses look familiar... they built those kinds of shiats all over NY.

A distinct lack of dead fish.  Or was that a lake thing?

The clean water act had just passed (1972).  Expect always see dead fished washed up on a lake until 1980 or so.

/don't remember them on the beach
//but the beaches were always so crowded you'd probably miss them
///and my memory really doesn't go back to 1973 except in small bursts

Reminds me of when I lived in upper Manhattan.  Every month, while I was walking my pooch,  I'd see a different car that had been stripped of its parts and set afire in Inwood Park.

I was born in 1970 and grew up a good chunk of the 70s in Brooklyn by way of East New York. Absent the gang uniforms, The Warriors movie was not too far removed from reality.

Need a ruling on the rules of Punch Buggy. Does the car have to be on the road or is floating in the bay valid? Is "rust" a color? Should I not act like I'm 10?

It's the last one, isn't it?

fun fact one of the first actions by EPA was to commission hundreds of photographers to document a "baseline" of conditions in America. These are a small set; there are many pictures of what was considered normal waste management that are somewhat horrifying.

What is going on there? Are they watching something off to the right? Are they just sitting out in the sun listening to their heads and hands sizzling in the sun? Is it cold? Is it hot? What the fark is this photo?
