Last I was in Japan was probably '02. But they had some pretty good arcades. Lots of porn though. I was playing this one Qix style game (where you uncover portions of the screen without a spark touching your unfinished line). You uncovered naked anime pictures. And it you uncovered a big enough area, they got *really* naughty.
There was also a Golgo 13 sniper game that was pretty damn cool.
And in one of those prize machine places, I won a blue flashing police light with a magnetic base you plug into your car's 12vdc port. That and a porn VHS.

Fun times.

They have been dying for a long time. Not unlike pubs in the UK. Covid is not to blame. It just helped.

Yeah, that's the sniper game. That one was pretty awesome. Mostly like doing 1 shot assignments.
The ones I remember is shooting a guy through the window of a passenger plane just as it was about to take off, and shooting the high heel off some famous girl as she walks up stairs so she'll fall down.
Since I didn't speak Japanese, I wasn't sure why I was doing these things, but I enjoyed it.

Akiba arcades were neat to visit, but you got much better odds of stuff at the seedy ones in Shinjuku.

Arcades in Japan have long been going towards "gambling for toys" over video games anyway. Pachinko with less on the line I guess. Still, there's nothing like walking into that haze of noise and smoke.

Not much smoke anymore, at least when we went in '18. They're finally trying to curb public and in-building smoking in most places, relegating it to Shame Cubes in out of the way corners. Really little mom and pop arcades may still allow it though. In any case their arcades aren't what they were as the selection has pretty much homogenized due to everyone running NESiCAxLive networked cabinets. On one hand, each cab now houses like 20-30 games. On the other hand, each cab houses the same 20-30 games, in every arcade. The person who stomps you at whatever latest fighting game doesn't even have to be sitting around you anymore either since it pulls opponents from the network as well. I saw much more weird/varied stuff back in '08, like lightgun, (locally) networked shooters, rhythm and other stuff. I'd actually argue we've almost reached parity again, at least if you're lucky enough to live near a Round1 and a good barcade. That's more damning for them than good for us but R1 also uses NxL cabs and imports other recent stuff.

I was lucky to have gone in the Summer of 2005 for two weeks. While I did not spend as much time as I thought I would in the arcades, I did enjoy them when I went.

Spend two or three days in the massive Sega arcade that is now closed. All that time playing Tekken. After 3 days I could not get anyone to play against me as my style of play was frustrating people. Was also told they hate to lose to Americans. Fun times.
