Last time we had them in Illinois, one got in the far back of my minivan and kept quiet until I was a half mile down the road. It was so goddamn loud I thought my car was falling apart. Fortunately I was next to a strip mall I could pull into.

People think I wear sunglasses when I drive because I look cool wearing them but really it's eye protection. I've had small pebbles, bugs, and other crap fly in through the window and hit the lenses of my shades more than a few times. If I hadn't worn them who knows how badly my eyes might have been damaged by now. If the debris isn't hitting you in the eyes you have no excuse for crashing.

You really should try to keep your head inside the vehicle when you drive.

/  I'm not sure if driving decapitated is a net gain or net loss of "cool".

At least they're not eating entire inner city suburbs like they do here in Oz.

People are ridiculous around bugs. They'll flail around like idiots if one gets near them.

I do admit there's one instance I'll do that. I slap my own head if a mosquito buzzes my ear in the middle of the night. It's annoying and I've had malaria before, which is no fun.

I was in Cincinnati when they popped out in 2004.  Pretty bad, but they weren't the meth-crazed ones like in this hatching.

The next brood? Murder Cicadas...

We had a particular type of bush/shrub as a privacy barrier in a house I grew up in. The Cicadas loved it and would sing the song of their people--very loudly--all summer. Mind you, it was about 50 or so bushed that ran about 75 yards down the side of the house.

But other than the noise, they never managed to bother us. I never even knew what they looked like except when they'd leave behind their shedded husks.

So what gives? Have we pissed off the Cicadas?

Everyone's annoyed at the cicadas until Cousin Johnny shows up and starts ripping out your teeth.

So I had one stuck to me and I didn't notice. I'm driving and the damn thing crawled up my sleeve. All I know is I screamed a scream that I have never heard then pulled over. I've been gently let him out the car because he had that long to live anyway but it scared the s*** out of me

Last summer we had cicada killer nests on the side of a hill in our yard.  It was so cool watching them fly back with a paralyzed cicada that will be food for their larvae.
