Indeed subby, the AFD believes that Germany should stop being ashamed of its Nazi past.

https://www.thelocal.de/20170118/far-right-afd-politician-urges-germany-to-stop-remembering-nazi-crimes/

I believe this state the election took place is one of the states the AFD is most popular in, so if the CDU was able to pull off a win there, their prospects in the rest of Germany look promising too.

I love that they have a political party simply called "The Left". Germans have a word for everything but couldn't come up with more than that?

Oh look, another election Bernie didn't win!

Asking for more of German is how you get "Backpfeifengesicht," or "Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän." Sometimes it's best to just let it be.

So subby taxing the rich, raising minimum wage, fighting climate change, universal healthcare, LGBQ and women's rights  are "right wing" , now?

Before it was called The Left, it was a merger of the Party of Democratic Socialism and Labor and Social Justice - the Electoral Alternative.

This state election can not be used as a forecast for the general election at all.

There was a poll that showed the AfD in the lead, and everyone and their dog tried to prevent that.
All those votes the CDU got? The weren't votee *for* them, they were votes *against* the AfD.

This result is very Sachsen-Anhalt-specific and it can't be overstated how stupid it would be to draw conclusions for the Bundestag election.
So of course the CDU is doing precisely that, which will prove to be very entertaining...

I think this analysis is spot-on.

/ The Mayor of Berlin has a decent chance of going Green too

Well, we're certainly not electing *Giffey* O.O

(She just had to resign from her post as Minister because her doctor's thesis was full of plagiarism, but apparently running for Berlin Mayor is still a-okay???)

gonna have to give you a big fat "doch" here. Ready? Ok here goes. *ahem*.

Doch.

It can be regarded as a bellwether for sure. Sachsen Anhalt is more rural and backwards than Sachsen or Brandenburg, and if the AfD is losing ground in SA it is reasonable to assume it has hit its high water mark elsewhere too.

The AfD's single raison d'etre was anti Syrian refugees, and now that its been proven that that group for the moment is doing its best to integrate and assimilate and just get on with it, it seems their core platform hasnt been able to reinvent and appeal to people. Auslaender raus is fine and good but when the auslaender arent on the news nightly groping german women and robbing ... it loses its punch.

The Left are a bunch of wankers. Former commies and pie in the sky TAX ALL THE THINGS guys. Like, the Left is actually the party the American Right tries to portray the democrats as. I'm a pretty leftie guy (supported bernie in the primaries) in the US but even for me these guys just seem stupid. They deserve a seat at the table in a democracy tho; democracies are filled with idiots so in theory i suppose a small % of their represenatives should represent them, just like the hard right, too, is representative of a piece of the population and should also be represented. (both should be tiny margins tho as commesurate tot heir numbers IRL)

and for y'all playing the "long german words" game, the best one is "Gewoehunungsbeduerftig", which is an adjective meaning, basically, "takes some getting used to". EN needs basically a whole sentence for it.

==========

I agree with your point that this election is an indicator for the AfD, and certainly a few of the other parties need some serious navel-gazing sessions based on this election, too (SPD, Left)

I'd like to add that the AfD was soaring when they were a fuzzy *hope* for some people.

Now that they shown their work in several state parliaments and the Bundestag, it turns out they're a) incompetent, and b) even more corrupt than the other parties, which is a bad look if you're criticising other parties for their corruption...
so yeah, they've shown people that they're only good at yelling divisive slogans and suck at doing anything constructive.

absolutely. why is it the blowhard nationalists are always such unfaehige Arschgeigen? Seems the same the world over. Almost as if being a narrow minded blowhard is indicative of a personality ill suited for the nuances and details of governing. or something.

i'd say more like "anti business".

all their electoral taglines are all about punishing greedy capitalist businesses, landlords, brokers, this sorta thing. they're not so much up in arms about the fascists. probably because the Strongholds of the Left and the strongholds of the AfD (fascists) are the same places.

Last time I talked about US politics with German redditors, more than one of them compared the GOP to the AfD, claiming that the Republican Party would be a fringe party with at most 10% of the seats in any Western European parliament.

The GOP and AfD are pretty close but even the AfD is left if the GOP.
