The chase started when a deputy attempted to stop the suspect for "failure to maintain the lane," the office said. It lasted about 40 minutes and included James driving a white Nissan SUV that struck an unmarked sheriff's vehicle, according to authorities.

SO GLAD that those heroic cops decided a minor farking traffic violation was sufficient rationale to endanger everyone for 40 minutes and directly risk serious injury to anyone in the car, including an infant.

If you're in Florida, and someone throws you a baby, don't catch it. Swat it down. Just swat it down.

I'm not sure why that question even exists.

I disagree with subby.   Throwing a baby should be an effective way to stop a chase, if it's only one cop chasing you.   They won't stop for a firecracker, but they will stop for a real baby on the road.    This doesn't work with multiple cops.

A deputy caught the boy, who was unharmed, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. John Henry James III was ultimately booked at the local jail on multiple charges, including battery on an officer and child abuse, according to inmate records.

I'd like to tip my cap to this deputy. Hero is an understatement. He's the toughest and strongest, both physically and mentally.

So, anyone who is driving drunk or impaired should be let go if they are willing to put others at risk by running.  Once that becomes official, I do not think it is going to end much better for the average non-drunk driver on the road.

Right, it clearly wasn't the fault of the parent who was swerving lanes and couldn't be arsed to pull over when the pretty red and blue lights appeared in the rearview mirror.

Come on, I know there's lots of cop hate to spare, but pulling over is ALWAYS an option.

The cops didn't decide that, dumbshiat. The dude who couldn't drive straight did when he took off running.

Well, you have to think this through.
The Smoke bomb is harmless. The cops can drive  right over that with no problem.
Same thing with the Firecracker. Sure, it's a momentary distraction, but again - all bark and no bite.
But a Baby? That's 18 years of Distraction until they discover it's been living at the station the whole time!

His point was that a person running from minor traffic stop isn't a sufficient grounds for a 40 min chase through traffic endangering lives. Those cars all have cameras, you know they got the license plate number and vehicle description, if not a general description of the driver. Let the go and have a unit wait for them at their house or show up to charge them later.

Deescalation is a tactic that needs more use when people aren't necessarily a danger to the public by default.

Frankly, I'm shocked as shiat that he didn't shoot the baby. He probably needs a medal for that.
