It's hard to imagine being in a society that is only connected to their past through oral tradition and paintings.  Imagine if we had no photography, no written language to create a continuity.  There would be no brand of nationalism.  When homo sapiens met others or neanderthals or other humans, they wouldn't have the cultural luggage in that encounter that we take for granted in our modern experiences.

And eventually writing was invented.
And the Greeks wrote the same thing...
And the Romans wrote the same thing...

Look up what "golden age/silver age" came from.  On the other hand the Greeks and Romans I am talking about were more grumpy conservatives than hipsters.

Any reason to doubt a major difference between modern hunter/gatherers and prehistoric ones?  Besides the ancient ones having wildly more rich hunting/gathering lands and thus more time off.

Way back in the dawn of time (although not quite the time TFA was talking about) I traveled across the country on a boy scout trip (to Philmont).  Along the way, we stopped at a church next to another scout troop made up of Native Americans, and the troop had a specific purpose of maintaining traditional Indian dance.  It was reasonably eye opening, especially for a white kid who had barely  ever been out of the burbs.  But presumably there were a ton of various dances invented over the years, and we can only imagine how many were completely forgotten thanks to smallpox and other methods that nearly wiped out the native population of North America.

Being in a low-technology setting would be remarkable.  Not only what you mentioned, but groups' behaviors would not have global impacts.

I'm trying to think of the individual aspect or at least the small group.  We're socialized into the knowledge of the founding of our country.  We have deep connections to actions that take place thousands of miles away.  I will not claim this to be a utopia, but it's hard to imagine being in that kind of position, separated from thorough notions of time.  We live in a space where we can particularly imagine the future and the past.  That wouldn't by their place, at least not the way we conceive it.

In a faded yellow-green

Now and ever bound to labor
On the sea and in the sky
Every man and beast appeared

They didn't need it to turn on each other. We are not even the only great apes who make war on each other. Go read up on the Gombe chimp war of the 1970's, just for example.
