I went to a independent movie theater in Lancaster, instead of the normal seats it was a assortment of second hand couches.

I don't go to the movies much, but the sound systems are part of the allure.  Sure, no kids crying or idiots talking, but I think you're giving half of the experience away by wearing headphones.

Crazy thing is, Japanese theaters are usually dead silent. No laughing, no whispering, no gasping. It's like a room full of mannequins. Seriously. Watching Deadpool, the girl in front of me gave me the stink-eye for laughing out loud... so often and with such vitriol that I thought she might call the manager and try to get me thrown out. I still plan on going to see Dune when it comes out, and I'll gasp if I wanna, dammit.

Wasn't there a fad for a while for night 'clubs' where everyone wears headphones.. if you take them off it's dead silent.

My wife, as a joke, sent me the Zillow link to a house with a 16 seat theater and a surprise MMA fight room.

She thought I wouldn't be excited about a room where I coul smash, but not break.

Shared headphones are kind of disgusting even with just a couple people, sharing them with dozens of people a day seems like a "not enough cleaning products in the world" situation.

Like, I'm not sure that the stereotypical cleanliness of a movie theater is the part of the theater experience that they want to play up by applying it directly to your head.

"Mini-theatre motels" are pretty commonplace in Asian cities.  Basically large rooms with a couch or two and a big screen, either for karaoke parties or watching movies.

Or for younger couples who need a place to fool around away from parents.  Or prostitutes and their johns.  It was always a good idea to confirm your room had been cleaned first.

You jest, but I've worn pants once in the 4 years since I moved to Florida.  Had to line up outside to get a blood test at 4:30 am with the temps in the low 40s.  So I put a pair of sweatpants on.  Shorts  every other day.

Daikanyama is the quirky trendy rich hipster area of Tokyo and Soranews isn't exactly the BBC. I bet they were just bumming the area around, stumbled on the shop, and asked to do advertisement article.

German theaters are a close 2nd.

Oh, addendum: when watching "Spider-Man: Far From Home" and near the beginning a character says "they love Americans in Europe", the theater *exploded* with laughter.

I have to say, it looks terrible. Why would anyone want to go to a theater that looks like an average living room? So they can pretend they have friends?

Before my neighborhood was gentrified, we had the last porn movie theater in the country. My neighbors would go to the local pub around the corner. When we were a bit into our cups, there were musings of going to the theater just to see it. We'd stumble over and get to the door. Even in a drunken haze, we realized there was probably 50 years of weird stickiness in there and never went through. It's since closed and is now a chic restaurant.

So... All the downside of a theater (other people, pants) plus all the downside of watching at home (smaller screen, suboptimal seating) plus the annoyance of wearing headphones.

Is this a joke?

thatguyoverthere70: I have to say, it looks terrible. Why would anyone want to go to a theater that looks like an average living room? So they can pretend they have friends?

I think it might be for dating. In South Korea there used to be places full of small rooms outfitted with a sofa and a TV where you could watch movies. This is no better than just renting a movie and watching it at home, but these were thriving businesses. Couples would go there on dates. Young people living at home can't watch a movie in their living room with the whole family there. So this place in Tokyo looks better than those video rooms - bigger, cleaner, bigger screens, trendier. To someone from the USA or Canada, it looks worse than a regular movie theatre or your own home. To people in Tokyo, it looks like an upscale version of a video room.
