Yep. Finally got to see my parents last week with vaccines, my brother brought his kids, and his two-year-old had a runny nose. Now we all have colds, and the kids couldn't give a shiat but the adults are all shambling around like zombies.

It sucks. It's not COVID. We'll be fine.

That said, I've also been wearing my mask while out because I don't want to give this to anybody.

Amazing how the "masks and social distancing don't work" brigade have no explanation as to why flu cases cratered and people are getting their first colds in a year.

Of course, these are the same people who told us wearing a mask was a one-way ticket to dying in a soup of your own carbon dioxide and halitosis, as evidenced by how surgeons go through all that training only to die after completing their first surgery, but the media covers it all up.

I am getting sick myself. Not covid, had both shots.
Related to the lack of sleep and poor nutrition over the last 4 weeks while my wife was in the hospital.

Yup... Last time someone was sick in our house was my wife getting "the flu" in February of last year. I use the quotes because it's the sickest she's ever been in her life, and it was diagnosed as the flu, but it was really early in the pandemic, and as sick as she was, we really aren't sure if it wasn't a more mild case of Covid.

But that's it. And for perspective, we have both of my adult stepsons living at home, my 12 year old daughter, and the girlfriend of one of my stepsons, as well as my wife and I. Nobody has gotten sick. Magic? No, of course not. But these anti-maskers will never look at reality and understand that. They're sure that we were all just "robbed" of something...

I have had a bit of a runny nose at times this week and sneezed a few times. It has been weird to finally be sick after over a year of nothing, must have gotten from one of the people they let back to work.

If there were to be just one small silver lining to this whole pandemic, I would hope it would be a change in people's behavior when they're sick - stay at home, and if you absolutely must go out, wear a mask.

bigdog1960: This one of the reasons I am going to continue to wear a mask.

Me too - for a lot of reasons, about only about half of which even relate to Covid.
I've had a change in attitude.
I no longer want your cold, or flu, or TB.
I no longer want your alcoholic, meth-soured breath.
I no longer want smoke, pollen, brake dust and dirt going into my lungs.
I no longer wish to be identified by eye or camera..
I'm keeping my mask.
Don't like it?
Sorry - nobody's business but my own.
No offense intended to anyone.

Caught my first cold in over a year a few weeks back. Kicked my butt like no cold had before. Ended up in bed most of the day at its peak. I attribute it to my body going "what the fresh hell is this hing?" after a year of mask-wearing.

Lesson learned. Next time someone in the house starts to show signs of a cold, I'm masking up.

Who the fark still had a cold after a year of distancing and masking? Or did it came from overseas (since 90% of flu variations come from china every single year)

Air travel is really a pain in the ass for disease spreading... even after a pandemic that killed 10+ million, we still arent doing mandatory health checks on every passenger coming from overseas because fark you, MONEY MONEY MONEY.

Wikipedia estimates it around 15% but I doubt if it has been studied closely enough to rule out 20% as a possibility. Most people don't go in for genetic testing when they have a mild cold.

Right. People in china spit everywhere on the ground in cities, dont wear masks, dont wash hands, have shiatty toilets. Its not for nothing that most plagues in history came from china, way too many people and shiatty health practices. First ever influenza pandemic : China. H2N2? Started in China. H3N2? China. H1N1? Started in Russia. H5N1? China. H7N9? China. Covid? China.

And they are doing health checks at airport? Give me a freaking break. They never did real health checks, not even during covid when airports were open.

I wish.

At the height of the pandemic, when I went on one of my rare trips outside my house, I was in line at the grocery store when a dipshiat right next to me took off his mask to cough into his hand.  Pretty sure that's where I caught it. It's not that people are stupid, it's that many of them literally do not farking think at all.

Except for covid none of those you mentioned were ever pandemic and all of them COMBINED didn't kill 10 million people. International air travel was all but shut down. Air traffic from the hardest hit nations was curtailed.

fark it, I'm arguing with an idiot and I'll be damned if you're going to drag me down to your level of stupidity.

A) 4 million, not 10 million.
B) Restricting air travel to sick people is only effective if a disease isn't already here.  If a disease is already rampant and widespread, letting a couple sick people fly here ain't gonna make that much worse.  The key is stopping it to not allow it to get here.  Just because there's countries like Australia that locked down so hard they locked out their own citizens from returning (which is beyond insane) doesn't mean that makes any sense to do.

Once covid is tampered down to background noise it probably makes sense to do that so it doesn't get reintroduced, but you know as well as I do that we'll never in a million years do that.

AppleOptionEsc: Mr. Coffee Nerves: Amazing how the "masks and social distancing don't work" brigade have no explanation as to why flu cases cratered...

Masks (well, non medical masks) don't do shiat against covid, 99.9% of your breath just takes the path of least resistance and goes around the mask.  The mask stops almost nothing.  Social distancing does, but only in the true sense of the word (talking to people over zoom instead of in person and working remotely).  Standing a randomly arbitrary distance away from someone accomplishes absolutely nothing, at least for covid, anyway.

Any disease that spreads through touch happened to be way down because we implemented a whole bunch of sanitizing protocols... that while they do basically nothing against covid, help immensely against all the diseases that spread through touch (plus staying away from each other).  We got lucky there.  Hopefully we continue those forever, but we probably won't.

Speaking of which, I really should buy some medical masks.  I'm sure at some point I'll get sick from something... and I'd like to protect others using something that's actually going to do something.

It's not exclusively airborne. A large majority of the cases are spread that way, but there have been reports where the likely transmission was from touching a shared surface (in places like China and NZ where they take quarantine and contact-tracing seriously).

I know, seriously, Fomite transmission is sooooo low for covid19. I tried to explain this to my fam and they just don't get it. My dad didn't understand why take out was safer than eating in a restaurant. My grandmother kept going to the grocery store because she didn't want someone else touching/ delivering her groceries. And then she'd wipe them down when she got home.....
Safety Theatre? Is that the term for these things people do that are completely useless but make them feel better.

You're not wrong about influenza, it's been pretty widely reported for years that new strains emerge there because of how they raise food animals in China. Common colds? Pretty sure they're so common that a.) they originate all over the globe, and b.) no one knows where the hell all the strains come from. Frankly, given the low stakes of yer typical rhinovirus infections, I'd be surprised if anyone's even bothered to look. Seems entirely possible that at least some of them originate *here* because of how we do child care and childhood education, but absent any evidence I'm not going to claim that.

Of course, I'll stand corrected if you have evidence that proves your earlier statement about common colds and China. I'll check back.

2021-06-05 2:16:18 PM
Why is everyone claiming it's the cold without any evidence (there is no test for the cold), and ignoring that it's kicking everyone's ass like the cold has never done before? Seriously, who gets bedridden from the cold?

https://news.yahoo.com/researchers-investigating-french-coronavirus-variant-163500133.html

If it's covid you're not going to notice because old people aren't on tiktok, and a new strain, especially one which is undetectable by standard tests, would be lost in the noise of what we do have.

Ivo Shandor: It's not exclusively airborne. A large majority of the cases are spread that way, but there have been reports where the likely transmission was from touching a shared surface (in places like China and NZ where they take quarantine and contact-tracing seriously).

Food transmission seems to have never been studied, but it's a great explanation for gastrointestinal problems as an initial exposure symptom.
