No outs, down 1, in the BOTTOM OF THE NINTH?

I figured this was just some dumbass in a blowout game when I saw the clip.

So your little league catcher runs out there but overthrows the ball with nobody backing anyone up and now nobody's covering home plate because your pitcher's dad is yelling at him to follow through and the first baseman is yelling at his mom to get him a snack and the runner scores.

As the assistant coach of a 4-6 year old tee ball team, this sounds a little too organized.

As a Nats fan who was watching the game and totally convinced that the opening double was the beginning of the end I was, needless (or is it needfewer) to say elated at the total stupidity of the pinch runner.  Even more fun the camera person did some nice shots of the dodo brain after he returned to the dugout.  Most entertaining - the pat on the back he got from one of his teammates upon slinking into the dugout.

Best thing of all:  doing this in Philadelphia.

I think the unassisted 2 tag out between 2nd and 3rd is the rarest of all baseball plays.

Oh, and Bryce Harper is on the injured list with his trumper-inspired disabled brain.

I've watched this clip a few times now, trying to give the runner every benefit of the doubt... but- especially given the situation in the game- I can't begin to justify that.

Great job by the catcher, though- put the runner in a no-win scenario, then just squeeze down.

Personally did the same move as a catcher over 50 years ago. It isn't as rare as people are making out.

The rule is, you make the runner commit, and if at all possible, don't throw behind the runner. And of course, move towards the runner.

UNWRITTEN RULES VIOLATION! This is as bad as the shift! Players out of position! Chaos! Untraditional!

So it violated the rule about never make the first out or last out trying to get to third.

"I will never know what it is like to be an African American man, woman, or child. The one thing I do know is I will always stand with them and for them. I will always be there when they need me. I will always have their backs, knowing they have always had mine," Harper wrote. "I will love my brothers and sisters and will teach my son to love all as well. To the Floyd family, and to all the other families that have experienced trauma, loss of life, inequality, racism, and hatred - I am so sorry for that. This world that we live in should have no room for it. We as Americans have to come together and stop this in all walks of life."-Bryce Harper

Catcher was smarter than the runner.  Runner has to commit to 3B or 2B and force the throw (and possible error) The fact he was mashing both L1 and R1 was his downfall and the longer he didn't commit the worse his chances were

Phils fan and the first I'm hearing of this. I Googled and apparently the evidence is something that appeared once on his Instagram stories-- an encouragement to donate to an anti-trafficking charity run by a shady guy.

A single social media post hardly equates to deep involvement with conspiracy theories or being a Trumper.

Find me any quotes from Bryce on the topic and I'll change my attitude. I appreciate what BunkyBrewman posted too.

I would agree that even the runner screwed up by not committing immediately.

But once that happened, I don't fault his decisions  his best chance to be safe was to get the catcher to commit to a throw and then bolt the other way. So the runner was trying to do that.

The catcher did a great job taking his time and not committing, playing it perfectly.

ALWAYS run the base runner back to the base he came from and don't throw unless you have to. I cringe every time I see a run down between third and home and the infielder rubs the guy towards home.
That play last week where they ran the hitter back to home , didn't tag him, then threw to the plate and missed the guy coming home , THEN missed the hitter getting to first-- it's like those guys never played the game before.
I blame tee ball

Apparently the Pirates agree with you as they designated Will Craig for assignment.  I coached baseball from the t-ball level to high school level and that "stealing home from 1b" was without question the dumbest play I've ever seen but it wasn't as costly in the end as the play (Nationals fan here) here and it's a close second.  I'm fairly confident if he doesn't get himself "picked off" the Nats lose that game - it's in their nature.
