Benevolent Misanthrope: When it comes to flavor, Outback > Ruth's Chris.  Fight me.  And Woz.

I've been to Ruth's Cris exactly once about 20 years ago.
It's still the only time I've ever sent back a steak. The appetizers and sides were crap as well.
My GF had gotten a gift certificate from work so at least it didn't cost anything.

Meanwhile I've always found Outback acceptable for the price.

I can see why they were trying to keep closed locations "open" on social media as they were trying to game the PPP Loan thing, which didn't work out very well for them.

didn't they get some $weet $weet Trump PPP cash?

Can't say I've been to either.

For a steak place it's either cheap, or something like Burns in Tampa

/if you're ever in Tampa, go to Burns

A high end steak place in price but not in quality.

I never understood the odd name of Ruth's Chris. What the hell? If Ruth wanted to name her restaurant after Chris why not just do so. I don't get it.

Outback. a.k.a. The Salt Palace.

If you really want a good steak, make it your damn self. If you are lazy, go to Texas Roadhouse or a good local non-chain Steakhouse.

Berns.Truly outstanding. Arrange a tour of the wine cellar

There's a regional chain in Florida - J Alexander's, in some places branded J Mark's. Excellent food, decent prices. A bit limited on selection, esp desserts and soups. But a great steak

I've started getting into Snake River Farms. Get a 32 oz bone-in ribeye the same quality as the high end steakhouses, dry brine and reverse sear. You'll end up with something better than they can ever make because you have the time to spend making it. Pair that with some homemade Mac and cheese (I use the recipe from the 1972 cookbook The Vegetarian Epicure) and roasted Brussels sprouts and you'll never go to a steakhouse again.

Ruth's Chris closed. Now where will I find a $75 steak with topped with canned mushrooms?

I have been to a Ruth's Chris once and I will never go back. They perpetuate the wet aged beef scam and I will not support that. Their souffle was tasty though.

I mean, that's like saying Billie Eilish's music is better than Beiber's.  They both suck.

Only thing good about Outback is the bloomin onion, which they've basically tripled the price on in the last decade.  Literally everytime I go there it's more expensive.  It's easily makeable at home (even easier baked).

Best steaks I've ever had?  Surprisingly... Chili's.

For San Francisco, John's Grill is a better steak restaurant than Ruth Chris's.

And more specifically, Ruth rebuilt after a fire destroyed the original Chris' Steak House, and for legal reasons was not allowed to reuse the name.  So she just called it "Ruth's Chris" and that was enough to get around the legal obligation.

She never liked the name, but did what she had to do to reopen.

Really?  Huh.  I'll remember that next time I'm in a city.  Honestly I always go to Outback when I visit the outside world, because I find their prime rib delightful.

/Grilling a nice strip loin for dinner tonight with my own special Montreal-ish seasoning on it.  It's cloudy and in the 50s, and may rain, but f*ck it.  I'll grill if I damn well please.

Yes if you remember to tell the waiter for lighter seasoning. Outback uses enough salt to cure your lips.

Didn't even know outback had prime rib.  I'll have to check that out.

But yes, Chili's (at least the one I go to) has surprisingly amazing steaks.

Fark Ruth's Chris for taking PPP. Yeah, they "gave it back", in that they were forced to. Never, ever again will I patronize them.

Outback has quantity. Ruth's Chris has burnt, charred, seared nuked pieces of meat. And it wasn't just the one in San Francisco. I've been to other Ruth's Chrises and all the others have this habit of completely immolating the outside of the meat. Do they have a grill set at 2000 ºC or something?

For sure. So is House of Prime Rib, although it's not clear whether a prime rib, as cooked as such, is a steak (as opposed to being a roast). There's also Harris Steakhouse, Hillstone on the Embarcadero, and several others.

They use Montague radiant broilers that sear them at at 1800º F.

Honestly if we're talking chain Steak houses, I've always preferred Texas Roadhouse to most of the others, though I'll admit it's on the borderline of being too noisy for me. Ruth Chris is too pretentious for me. If I want a fantastic steak in a more subdued atmosphere, there's numerous places locally that surpass it, and Fort Wayne, IN is not a large city by any means.
