They way I read this is China blinked hard. They promised another massacre if the people showed up. They executed all the people who work with the charities and organizers, as a show of force. Then the people showed up en masse, and China blinked. Wow.

Remember that time during the Vietnam war that one of our soldiers executed a Viet cong point blank in the head on camera?  Many historians point to that moment as the turning point in the war.

This is a hoax. The protests directly lead to the authoritarian hardliners in the party gaining control and suppressing the internal liberalization/reformist movement in the party started by Deng Xiaoping once Mao died. His closest subordinates were the ones pushing the most liberal reforms during this time as Deng was elderly and he and his subordinates were permanently marginalized during and then after the protests.

China then ruthlessly cracked down by staging nationwide arrests and executions of anyone who was perceived to be against the regime or engaged in protests against the the government. These were published on national television, radio, and media before the CCP decided the entire event needed to be censored years later. If still alive, the person who stopped the tanks from leaving the square watched those stories or at least heard about it and spent decades looking over their shoulder. He understands better than the majority of people out protesting today what happens to anyone directly related to the 1989 protests and there is no way they would admit they were that person. Everyone who was old enough to understand what was going on, knows not to bring that subject up. The current generation is the first one that would have no direct knowledge of the protest and most importantly the crackdown that happened right after.

Why is it strange that people would want to show solidarity with a democratic movement if they believe in democracy? It's the same with people honking sometimes when driving by protesters or strikers.

I was watching this as it happened. From my home in California on cable TV. I was in high school at the time but were on an abbreviated schedule on account of finals or something like that. Just before the crackdown began I watched the broadcast networks and CNN get their China bureau visited by government officials coming with papers to cut their satellite feed, and the TV crews tried to negotiate, claim the paperwork wasn't in order, maybe even consider a bribe all to delay the shutdown. But eventually, one by one the networks cut their feeds.

But they didn't cut the phone lines. Not right away at least.

So they kept on talking about what was going on. They even managed to push some still photos through. It took about two minutes for each SD video still to scan through. It was 1989 and this was being done with an equivalent of Fax technology, but it was better than nothing.

Despite the best efforts of the CCP, the world saw what they were trying to cover up in almost real time.

/This is the best of my recollection. It's been over 30 years but it's still pretty vivid, though I'm sure I've fudged some details.

In 1975, during the fall of Saigon, Loan fled South Vietnam to the United States.[4] There he moved to Dale City, Virginia.[19] He then opened a restaurant called "Les Trois Continents" in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Burke, Virginia at Rolling Valley Mall.[20][21][22] The restaurant served hamburgers, Vietnamese cuisine, and pizza, but was described as more of a pizzeria.

From here.

Kuta: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu%27erkaixi

Uh...

"Wu'erkaixi claimed that he was present at the square when the soldiers arrived after martial law was declared and that he had personally seen around 200 student protesters cut down by gunfire in Tiananmen square. However, according to the Columbia Journalism Review, all verified eyewitness accounts had attested that the students who remained in the square when troops arrived to clear them, had all been allowed to leave the square peacefully. It was later "proven" that Wu'erkaixi himself had already left the square several hours before the massacre inside the square that he claimed allegedly occurred.[4] US embassy cables obtained and released by Wikileaks in 2011 describe how while there were killings in the larger Beijing area, there were, in fact, no killings in Tiananmen Square. [5][6]"

Weird fact: Around this time of the year, Chinese online ESL platforms block any messages with the number 64 in them (for example, "4 cubed is 64") because of Tiananmen on 6/4.

But why does China use the US date format? Why isn't it 4/6, like normal countries?

So when people are trying to get around filters or censors they sometimes use alternative means to reference what they really want to talk about.

So instead of using a local date time group for example they might use one that a different country uses, especially if the other country hosts information about the event they want to discuss.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Execution_of_Nguy%E1%BB%85n_V%C4%83n_L%C3%A9m

The individual executed was a Viet Cong soldier out of uniform who had killed a Lt Colonel and murdered his family.  He was acting as a "spy" and therefore summary execution was seen as authorized under the laws of war however it may have been illegal under the laws of South Vietnam although that country no longer existed or had a government to prosecute.

We were watching T.V.
Watching T.V.
We were Watching T.V.
Watching T.V.
In Tiananmen Square
Lost my baby there
My yellow rose
In her bloodstained clothes
She was a short order pastry chef
In a Dim Sum dive on the Yangtze tideway
She had shiny hair
She was the daughter of an engineer
Won't you shed a tear
For my yellow rose
My yellow rose
In her bloodstained clothes
She had perfect breasts
She had high hopes
She had almond eyes
She had yellow thighs
She was a student of philosophy
Won't you grieve with me
For my yellow rose
Shed a tear
For her bloodstained clothes
She had shiny hair
She had perfect breasts
She had high hopes
She had almond eyes
She had yellow thighs
She was the daughter of an engineer
So get out your pistols
Get out your stones
Get out your knives
Cut them to the bone
They are the lackeys of the grocers machine
They built the dark satanic mills
That manufacture hell on earth
They bought the front row seats on Calvary
They are irrelevant to me
But I grieve for my sister
People of China
Do not forget do not forget
The children who died for you
Long live the Republic
Did we do anything after this
I've a feeling we did
We were watching T.V.
Watching T.V.
We were watching T.V.
Watching T.V.
She wore a white bandanna that said
Freedom now
She thought the Great Wall of China
Would come tumbling down
She was a student
Her father was an engineer
Won't you shed a tear
For my yellow rose
My yellow rose
In her bloodstained clothes
Her grandpa fought old Chiang Kai-shek
That no-good low-down dirty rat
Who used to order his troops
To fire on the women and children
Imagine that imagine that
And in the spring of '48
Mao Tse-tung got quite irate
And he kicked that old dictator Chiang
Out of the state of China
Chiang Kai-shek came down in Formosa
And they armed the island of Quemoy
And the shells were flying across the China Sea
And they turned Formosa into a shoe factory
Called Taiwan
And she is different from Cro-Magnon man
She's different from Anne Boleyn
She is different from the Rosenbergs
And from the unknown Jew
She is different from the unknown Nicaraguan
Half superstar half victim
She's a victor star conceptually new
And she is different from the Dodo
And from the Kankanbono
She is different from the Aztec
And from the Cherokee
She's everybody's sister
She's symbolic of our failure
She's the one in fifty million
Who can help us to be free
Because she died on T.V.
And I grieve for my sister🎶
