I sponsor one of these adorable little badasses for my mom. One of her favorite presents ever.

So, wouldnt it be better to just bring back some of the old WW2 minesweeper tanks to go over areas like this instead of having to do it by hand?

APOPO has a better article on its website.

PDSA Gold Medalist Magawa Retiring

They're doing a fundraising drive right now.

No telling just how many lives (and limbs) Magawa alone has saved, but it's cool to think that there are people walking around now who wouldn't be alive without his work and the work of the other HERO rats.

Give that rat a steak, assuming he'd like a steak.  If not, give him a giant wheel of cheese.

Did Morocco ever get their minesweeper monkeys back?

Immediately after WW2, when all those flail tanks were still around, at least some of the mine clearance was done by POWs.

No...we have better ways to do it now. However, tanks don't necessarily work well in jungle areas. Robots are an option but various kinds of animals are probably easier for untrained people and less expensive, meaning more land can be cleared in less time.

A soccer field is at least 70 by 115 yards which makes it similar in size to a football field. Are you trying to make someone say that your name fits?

That's a huge amount of land, equivalent to a small town.  They're probably only clearing areas where they know or suspect line mines to be - not every random place, so one mouse is incredibly effective at getting this done.

FTA: "Magawa is capable of searching a field the size of a tennis court in just 20 minutes - something Apopo says would take a person with a metal detector between one and four days."

I'm saying the article referred to "the size of a tennis court".  Not "a football field" which many Mer'can writers would use.  And they didn't include a "Tennis courts to Football fields" conversion guide.  That's all.

The first time I read the article, it said "soccer field" but you were already referring to "tennis court" which had me confused. I think they updated the article but it maybe didn't propagate quickly.

I'd point this out as a glitch in the matrix, but I'm taking the Joey Pants approach. I like delicious food.

Never mind...the article that I read is apparently here...

https://www.news4jax.com/tech/2021/06/05/mine-sniffing-rat-magawa-ends-years-of-hard-work-in-cambodia/

Magawa has cleared more than 141,000 square meters (1.5 million square feet) of land, the equivalent of some 20 soccer fields, sniffing out 71 land mines and 38 items of unexploded ordnance, according to APOPO.

WTF?
