The event invite included an image of what looks like a new Windows logo, with light shining through the window in only two vertical bars, creating an outline that looks very much like the number 11. Microsoft followed up with an animated version of this image, making it clear the company intentionally ignored the horizontal bars.

Or they just used their own software.

They're most likely just going to call it Microsoft Windows. I don't see them going back to a numbering system.

Walgreens is Win7, usually using IE unless a site requires Edge. Our pharmacy software is a proprietary thing that was written in the 90's. Our inventory? AS/400.

There is no money in just putting out patches. Gotta get the businesses to shell out for new version licenses. Give it away to the home users to make it appear "free".

Don't most businesses just pay for an enterprise license that's basically the same price per seat no matter what version of Windows you are running? Hell, with long term servicing agreements they probably make MORE off of companies running older versions.

Demand that the schools your kids go to use open software.  Free software.  What are the kids using, especially before HS specialty classes like photography, that requires windows?  All the spyware?  Because to write an essay, there are tons of free software that is perfectly serviceable.  All the propriatry shiat that the schools buy because somebody is getting a kickback?  Get better administrators.  Hell, most schools are probably using a web based interface for everything, like google docs etc...  So even chromeOS is fine.

Stop being addicted to Microsoft, google, apple, Facebook, Instagram, and only fans.  Demand your schools use free software.  Not something to get the kids addicted to the mega corps.

Huh. Didn't they promise that Windows 10 would be the last, with ongoing forever updates?

Not like I bought that line, it seemed pretty stupid when I read it.

But just about everything they talked about in that article seemed to be built on the principle "we hate our users, so we're going to fark with them yet again just for funsies." If an icon so much as moves to a different spot on the desktop my wife needs me to move it back. Completely redone interface? Computer interfaces mostly rely on muscle memory. It's like deciding that every six years or so you're going to completely change how a car is controlled. Hey, we are getting rid of pedals and instead moved acceleration and brake controls to the seat surface, flex your left thigh to accelerate and your right to brake. And that steering column was such a hazard, now you will steer by moving your head! Also the windshield is now a monitor that displays the outside. The window roll down switch now toggles between views, easy to cycle through them all for the view that suits you best We! We put tiny wipers on the cameras, don't worry!

What people want from computers is predictability. Whatever goes on under the hood doesn't matter so long as when I click on my icon I recognize the response.

This is a very basic principle. I have never understood why they don't understand it.

Because it's not that good of an idea? Employers want experience with Windows, Excel, Word etc. When those kids graduate and apply for jobs and say "well I've never used Excel but I have used this free spreadsheet you've never heard about" the employer is going to hire someone else who has Excel experience.

There's something to be said for Office Suite experience simply because it's what everyone uses but any kid even vaguely interested in IT needs exposure to and experience with a Linux CLI. It doesn't even have to be a lot, just getting them comfortable with the directory structure, permissions and editing some conf files.

I don't need an updated Windows UI with more white space, rounded corners, etc. Christ Windows 95 could have handled all that with Themes. Funny how time goes on there's less control of the OS.

Great, a chance for work to screw around with my work laptop even more.

8th gen i5, 8gb ram, and a smaller NVMe drive - should be fairly snappy for basic office tasks, right? Then why does it take >3 minutes to just get into outlook from a cold boot!

Excel? As someone who actually works in finance for a Fortune 50, Excel has pretty much entirely went the way of the dinosaur in our shop - its all pandas dataframes in python or pipelining data into a visualization product (Qlik/Tableau/etc)

I guess if I was to summarize my attitude towards operating systems it would be like this.

Operating systems are "just" the interface between the software that users need and the hardware they have.  The more time people are spending interacting with the OS, the worse the OS is performing its job, and the less productive the user is.  Ditto for IT... time spent preparing for, upgrading to, and training users on a new OS is time not spent doing something else.

To market a new release of an OS as new & exciting is bizarre.  A new release implies disruption, meaning the OS is taking center stage, meaning it is failing to perform its function.  It should be something that is forced due to new hardware or software and rolled out apologetically, not done just because & celebrated.  It's like throwing a party to show how badly you failed at your one job.

But not only does Microsoft publicly expect us to be excited about the looming disruption, they are certainly planning to try to force us to participate, because privately they know that we won't willingly do so.  They will make hardware vendors (ex. graphics cards) implement Win11 specific features, and developers (ex. game publishers) do the same, and drop support for older versions of Windows.

And the whole time, they'll arrogantly & condescendingly pretend they are doing us a favor.
