As much as I enjoy playing games the scene is an absolute shiat-show consisting of the dregs of the incel barrel.

Never once when I was playing this awesome game did I think, "Man, I wish Aloy was hotter".

It's a post-apocalyptic game with robotic dinosaurs, doubt Aloy has time to hit the gym and head over to Sephora to get beauty products.

It's about ethics in video game objectification!

Aloy was a tad better looking than most of the characters in that game. They didn't exactly have moisturizer, sunscreen, and cosmetics in that world. When you're living in a subsistence, hunter/gatherer society, sculpting one's eyebrows is not a big priority. And there was nothing wrong with her curves, she was just wearing improvised armor the entire farking game.

She isn't farking there to be pretty, she's there to kick ass! Jesus, what is wrong with people?

Actually, they did.  If you noticed, several of the Totally Not Mormons wore makeup.  Admittedly, they were almost all dudes, but it was there.

I actually thought the character designs from the first game piled the hotness pretty high.  I mean, look at these abs:

She's got abs like she just scored the lead in a Marvel movie.  And a lot of the supporting characters are nothing to sneeze at either:

Hawt.  Characters actually use a lot of makeup, jewelry, and elaborate anime-ish costumes, but they take great pains to ground all of it this sort of pseudo-bronze age setting.  In fact, you might not notice the makeup because the design as a whole feels very grounded.  I think that contrasts with the sort of Michael Bay hotness some dudes demand, where the female lead seems distractingly beautiful in a way that makes you question what they're even doing there.

I don't have any background, but a quick scrolling made it look like he picked a bad camera angle and then complained that she looked like a dude.  I'm sure lots of women look great when they are looking down and squinting in the sun.

I notice his "hotter" picture just happens to shift the viewing angle down and to the left.  I'm sure that was just an accident.

True, but have compared it to Hollywood casting?  The Star Wars incels whining about Rose was horrible, but what is more shocking is just how rare they have such an opportunity to find anyone less than full "Hollywood hot" in a movie.  It even has a trope: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HollywoodHomely Expect any "homely girl with a heart of gold" to be cast like MaryAnn vs. Ginger.

Less true for guys, but consider Aragon.  J.R.R.Tolkien specifically mentions he's ugly (and is a critical plot point when the hobbits meet him, and the line "all gold does not glitter" makes no sense without it), but the guy is portrayed by Viggo Mortensen (of course, Aragon still is seen as "lordly" and has Éowyn all over him, so this is a quick visual fix, but I have my doubts).

Aloy is "coed grocery shopping" pretty.  She's not decked out like a streetwalker, but she's strangely blemish-free for a woman living in a post-post-apocalyptic world, especially one trundling around as a murder-hobo.  That being said, she is also a few orders of magnitude less whorish than the usual Homer Simpson Makeup Shotgun treatment female video characters get.  So, she is "modern normal" in a medium saturated with "supermodels are utter dogs compared to the 'ugly' women on screen".  Which makes her seem dowdy by comparison.  She also has expressions that try and convey emotions beyond High on Molly and Porn Pant, so you can easily find shots of her scowling or looking confused as fark.

While I admit this is a "whataboutism" post, the odd thing is that the gaming market tolerates these characters (aside from the noisy incels.  Who the studios are likley purposefully driving off), while the "Hollywood market" appears to demand such characters).

Sooner or later actors will be effectively puppetmasters of deepfakes where they animate charactersTM whose IP is owned by Disney or a few other big IP firms.  It will be curious to find out if they stay all "Hollywood hot" or if that was a myth perpetuated by the Weinsteins of Hollywood to have easy access to the hottest women on the planet.

I'm guessing not.  Often the "A/B/C lists" have a strong beauty component to it beyond a simple casting/director/producer's choice would have.

Reminds me of one of my friends complaining about the new She-Ra being too "manly". My response was some flavor of "So you're mad that a show aimed at pre-teen girls doesn't get your dick hard?"

I mean...look fellow peen-havers. *sits in chair backwards* Let's rap. It's okay to not be catered to for literally the entirety of your existence. Sometimes it's okay that other people exist and might have The New Thing geared towards them. You'll just have to make due with only 90% of our entire culture and social contract being filtered through the lens of your comfort.

So the "improved" one was meant to be a less politically-correct version to make fun of incels in the first place, and then incels took it and started using it unironically.

He looks foul but feels fair, while a servant of the Dark Lord would look fair and feel foul.

Yeah, that was a gripe I had with Viggo's casting.

Yes.  I think part of the confusion wrt She-Ra is that in the original show, she was supposed to be in her mid-teens, but was drawn as a mid-twenties farktoy.  When the new version was drawn much closer to how her given age should look, the incels had a fit because she wasn't a farktoy anymore, not realizing she never should have been in the first place.

First off she was hit as hell. Secondly it was actually a huge plus that there was no romance sub story. She's there to kick ass and ain't got time for any of that nonsense.

Well, obviously, duh! How is the game supposed to be considered any good if the main character doesn't make me want to constantly whip out my dick and start jacking? That's why Kotaku is moving to a rating system for games where they tell you how chafed their dick is as a measure of its quality.

It sure made introducing my grandma to video games real weird though.

"fark-toy" is actually pretty on the nose, because She-Ra was conceived of as a toy property first, like He-Man before it and others around the same time.  And that probably explains why she was a leggy Barbie-like character.  Those impossible Barbie bodies aren't 100% driven by sexism.  The bigger reason is that if you scale down human proportions to toy sizes, they feel somehow off to a human eye.  They look like pudgy, stumpy limbed, tiny-headed babies.  You have to mess with the proportions a bit to get them safely on the right side of the uncanny valley.  Even though that means scaling the design back up would result in some weird, 8-foot tall giraffe lady with like a 10-inch waist.

The sillier fact about 1985's She-Ra is that the toy company only initially budgeted for two toy molds - one male and one female.  That's why all of the Princesses of Power mostly look like palate-swaps of She-Ra.

Adora was the twin sister of Adam, neither was in their teens during the runs of their shows. Adora/She-Ra was 24 in the original series.

And none of that means anything to the reboot.

In the past decade Western video game culture has fallen into the "ugly = mature art" trap that other media visits now and then. The good news is that this means video games have finally been recognized as art, but the bad news is modern art is farking awful. Aloy isn't ugly, certainly not compared to most Western protags, but...
The thing is, that they modeled her after an actress that people obviously appreciate for her good looks, and then purposely made her look bad:

You wouldn't complain if this pretty woman was in a movie you're watching, and in fact you've come to expect attractive people in your movies, yet somehow there's this culture war about artificial people. Are people still so insecure about playing video games that they can't have attractive fake people in them? People in video games are creations and the industry isn't limited to the genetically blessed so this is a stupid thing.
Maybe it's just that nerds give in to pressure far more easily than Hollywood.
Personally, I like looking at pretty women in movies and video games, but the latter is certainly not something I'd say with my real life name attached.

What nonsense is this? Wake me when "video game culture" starts imitating Takashi Miike, and then maybe I'll believe that games have truly embraced ugliness as a motif.

Also, I find it incredibly ironic that your "the video game character looks worse than the actress she's based on" image uses the shiattiest possible pictures of the actress and thus makes the video game character look great in comparison.
